Grand Canyon Golf Team Competes in Day 2 of The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course

STANFORD, Calif. – The second day of The Goodwin tournament at Stanford Golf Course saw the Grand Canyon University (GCU) golf team finishing with an 8-over-par performance, placing them 20th among 30 competing teams.

Current Standings and Performance

GCU’s overall score now stands at 15 over par, keeping them ahead of No. 18 Georgia Tech in the leaderboard. Notably, they trail No. 50 Little Rock by just four strokes and No. 39 Washington by five strokes, making the competition tight as the final round approaches.

Top Teams:
The day featured impressive performances from No. 24 Brigham Young University (BYU), which climbed three spots to secure the overall lead at 12 under par. Additionally, No. 35 UCLA showcased remarkable improvement, jumping six spots on what was a pivotal moving day in the tournament.

Key Performers for GCU

Among the Lopes, sophomore Matthew Diehl made significant strides, moving up 47 places with a 1-under-par second round. Starting on the 10th hole, Diehl achieved a birdie on the par-4 and added another birdie along with six pars on his back nine. Currently, he sits at 4 over for the tournament in 78th place.

Another standout, sophomore Gavin O’Neill, maintained his strong performance, remaining in the top 30 at 28th place with an even-par score after two rounds. O’Neill recorded three of his four birdies on the back nine and finished with five consecutive pars, placing him above ten nationally ranked competitors.

Classmate Måns Boje matched O’Neill’s excellent performance, shooting 1 over and climbing 12 spots in the standings. Boje’s round included four birdies, two on each nine, bringing his overall score to 3 over and placing him 61st.

However, GCU also faced challenges, with Nixon Lauritzen positioned at 119th with a score of 8 over, and freshman Daniel Nilsson in 148th place at 15 over par. Despite these setbacks, the Lopes showcased resilience, notching 110 pars, which ties them for the fifth-most in a competitive field.

Upcoming Challenges

The final round of The Goodwin tournament will conclude on Saturday. Following this event, GCU is set to return to Arizona for the upcoming Cowboy Classic, a two-day tournament scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa.

As the Lopes continue to push through the tournament, fans and supporters await the culmination of their efforts in what has been an exciting showcase of talent and determination at one of the premier collegiate golf venues.
