TULARE COUNTY, Calif. – Highway 99 has been cleared and reopened following a significant vehicle collision on Saturday morning that involved 59 vehicles. Initial reports from the County of Tulare inaccurately estimated that up to 150 vehicles were part of the incident, but the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has confirmed the lower count.

The CHP began receiving emergency calls about the pile-up shortly after 8:15 a.m. The crash, characterized by chaotic scenes of overturned vehicles, occurred in both directions near Avenue 24. Officer Adrian Gonzalez described the scene as “carnage,” with vehicles stacked precariously on each other.

Eyewitness Accounts and Response

In just 11 minutes, all traffic came to a halt. Officer Gonzalez noted that debris and vehicle fluids covered the roadway, complicating the emergency response. CHP managed to clear the scene and fully reopen the highway in just six hours, learning from a prior accident involving 17 vehicles on nearby Highway 99 that resulted in two fatalities due to fog.

Injuries and Casualties

Out of the involved parties, 10 people were taken to the hospital. Among those, nine sustained minor injuries while one individual suffered a moderate forehead injury. All others were transported to the Tulare Ag Center for assistance.
