Surfer Rescued After Being Swept Away by High Waves in Santa Barbara

A dramatic rescue unfolded on Friday evening at Haskell’s Beach in Goleta, Santa Barbara County, where a 26-year-old surfer found himself in peril after being knocked off his board by unexpectedly high waves.

Night Surfing Turned Dangerous

The young man was enjoying a night surf with a friend when he was suddenly pulled into the turbulent waters, leaving his surfboard to wash ashore. Concerned for his well-being, his friend quickly dialed 911, alerting authorities that he was missing.

Swift Response from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department

At 6:28 p.m., a rescue crew from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department arrived on the scene. Utilizing aerial drones to scan the coastline, they successfully spotted the surfer approximately a quarter-mile offshore.

Video Evidence of the Rescue

Dramatic footage of the incident reveals the man clinging to the top of a lobster trap buoy, which played a pivotal role in preventing him from drifting further into the ocean. Two officers from the fire department’s water rescue team bravely retrieved him and guided him back to safety on shore.

No Medical Attention Needed

Fortunately, the surfer did not require any medical assistance following the incident. This close call serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures while surfing.

Important Safety Tips for Ocean Enthusiasts

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department emphasized a crucial safety tip in a recent X (formerly Twitter) post: “Never go into the ocean alone—especially in rough conditions. [Having someone with you] can save lives.”

Conditions at Haskell’s Beach

According to Surfline, a popular surf monitoring website, wave conditions at Haskell’s Beach were described as “[easing] a touch in the afternoon but [pumping] through sundown.” Despite being a spot known for beginner surfers, the beach’s changing conditions can pose risks.

Environmental Concerns: Lobster Traps on the Shore

In addition to the rescue, a 2021 survey by the Santa Barbara Channelkeeper Watershed Brigade identified 44 lobster traps littering the coastline between Haskell’s and Ellwood Beaches, as reported by NoozHawk, a local Santa Barbara news outlet. Volunteers from the Watershed Brigade continue to combat this issue by removing the hazardous traps, which can be dangerous to both beachgoers and marine wildlife.

Drowning Statistics and Safety Awareness

Between 2016 and 2023, California witnessed a staggering 3,631 fatal unintentional drowning cases, as noted by the state’s Public Health Department. Furthermore, the National Weather Service reported 99 surf-related deaths in 2025, nine of which occurred in California. These alarming statistics underscore the critical need for swimmers and surfers to prioritize safety while enjoying coastal activities.

For those planning to hit the waves, remember: safety in numbers and awareness of the conditions can make all the difference during your ocean adventure. Stay safe and informed!
