Power Surges Disrupt JMA Wireless Dome During Syracuse-California Basketball Game
Syracuse, N.Y. — The JMA Wireless Dome experienced significant lighting issues during the intense men’s basketball matchup between Syracuse and California on Wednesday night. Two separate power surges caused disruptions, resulting in some lights going out and scoreboards freezing.
First Power Surge: A Brief Flicker
Approximately 14 minutes into the second half, the first power surge struck. Fans witnessed a momentary flicker in the lighting, which caused the scoreboards to freeze temporarily. Fortunately, the lighting system quickly restored power, allowing the game to continue without further interruption.
Overtime Complications: Second Power Surge Hits
The second surge hit just after the game transitioned into overtime. This time, multiple surrounding lights failed to operate, and the scoreboards went dark, ultimately remaining inoperative for the remainder of the game. Despite these challenges, the court remained well-lit, ensuring that the action on the hardwood could continue with minimal interruption.
Widespread Power Flashes Reported Across Central New York
The power issues at the dome were part of a larger problem affecting Central New York that evening. According to National Grid spokesperson Jared Paventi, multiple customers across the region reported power flashes due to a fault on a transmission line in southern Onondaga County. The transmission line has since returned to normal operations as crews analyze the cause of the power outages that occurred between 8 and 10 p.m.
Paventi clarified that the outages experienced at the dome were separate from a minor power outage affecting 32 residents in the town of Manlius.
Game Continuation amid Technical Difficulties
While the environment in the dome dimmed due to the lighting issues, the basketball court remained bright enough for the game to progress. Officials briefly paused the game to assess the situation and consult with Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry and California coach Mark Madsen.
Players’ Perspectives on the Disruption
Syracuse players William Kyle and Nate Kingz commented that the outage of the scoreboards and the unusual lighting conditions did not hinder their performance, as the court was adequately lit. Coach Madsen, reflecting on the circumstances, noted that he had never encountered a scenario where the power had gone out during a game. Drawing on his experiences growing up playing basketball outdoors, he appreciated the preparations made by Syracuse University facilities staff to ensure the game could be completed.
Facilities Management Response
Pete Sala, Syracuse University Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer, explained that the lights illuminating the court operate on a separate system and were unaffected by the power surges. The game concluded with the dome illuminated at around half capacity due to the failed scoreboards and ribbon lighting after the second surge.
Syracuse Triumphs Over California
Despite the power challenges, Syracuse emerged victorious, winning the game in double overtime with a score of 107-100.
