Long Beach Hit-and-Run Driver Sentenced to Two Years in Prison

Overview of the Incident

In a tragic turn of events, Mario Acosta has been sentenced to two years in prison for a 2024 hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of Nikki Rash, a Long Beach woman. Acosta accepted a plea deal with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, pleading no contest to felony hit-and-run charges.

Details of the Fatal Crash

On December 26, 2024, Acosta crashed into Rash’s vehicle near her home in Long Beach. After sustaining serious injuries, Rash succumbed nine days later.

Acosta fled the scene of the accident, returning to his residence in Northern California, just outside Sacramento. His return to Long Beach was facilitated by the U.S. Marshals, who apprehended him after a three-week search.

Victims’ Impact Statements

During the sentencing hearing, Acosta listened to poignant statements from Rash’s family. Foster Rash, Nikki’s husband, expressed his deep sorrow and anger, stating:

“You chose to operate your car at an excessive speed. You chose to disregard a red light, and your bad choices killed Nikki. Then, you chose to evade the authorities.”

Acosta was visibly emotional as he heard the heartfelt words from family members, including Nikki’s sister, Judith McCaughey. She shared a touching sentiment:

“The Bible says that a sister is worth more than rubies, and I can attest to that.”

Future Prospects for Acosta

Depending on his behavior while incarcerated, Acosta may be eligible for release in as little as one year. However, the impact of his actions will likely resonate far beyond his time in prison, leaving Rash’s loved ones to cope with their profound loss.
