Winter Weather Alert: Heavy Rains and Snow Forecast for Northern California during Christmas Week

Continued Precipitation Expected

As Christmas week unfolds, Northern California is bracing for a combination of lingering rain and heavy snow. Meteorologists anticipate scattered showers and possible thunderstorms as a significant winter storm navigates the region. After a brief break from stormy weather, residents can expect an uptick in precipitation starting later today.

Rain and Snow Totals

Recent weather patterns revealed that areas in the Valley, like Sacramento, recorded approximately 1.45 inches of rain, while spots like Auburn experienced up to 3.42 inches. Monitoring these totals is vital, especially with a Flood Advisory in effect.

Expected Rainfall by Region:

  • Sacramento: 1.45 inches
  • Stockton: 1.10 inches
  • Modesto: 1.64 inches
  • Auburn: 3.42 inches
  • Marysville: 2.46 inches

Snow Accumulation Highlights

Higher elevations are gearing up for significant snow accumulation:

  • Elevations above 4,500 feet are under a Winter Storm Warning, expecting several feet of snow by Friday evening.

Travel Disruptions

Travel conditions in mountainous regions are already problematic. Chain controls are mandated on several key routes, particularly Interstate 80 and Highway 50, where the speed limit is reduced to 30 mph and 25 mph respectively when chains are required.

Safety Tips for Mountain Travelers:

  1. Always bring chains for your vehicle.
  2. Drive slower than usual, especially in snowy conditions.
  3. If possible, avoid mountain travel from Wednesday through Friday to mitigate risks.

Emergency Response Measures

In response to the ongoing weather conditions, California’s Governor has deployed emergency response teams and equipment to nine counties, including El Dorado, Orange, and Nevada. These measures aim to protect residents from flooding and severe weather.

Wind Conditions

Although wind conditions have calmed down, light breezes under 20 mph are expected throughout Friday. Residents may experience slight disruptions, but the worst of the wind has passed.

Flooding Concerns

The National Weather Service has issued warnings about minor flooding in low-lying areas due to the recent precipitation. Residents in affected areas should remain vigilant and avoid driving through flooded roadways.

Conclusion

As winter weather continues to impact Northern California, residents are urged to stay informed about the latest forecasts and travel conditions. With additional rain and snow expected in the coming days, safety precautions are essential for safeguarding lives and property.
