Gustavus Adolphus College Softball Team Achieves Stellar Sweep in California
WHITTIER, Calif. – The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team marked a successful start to their spring break trip in California by sweeping their first two matches against the Whittier College Poets and the University of La Verne Leopards. The Gusties rallied from behind to claim a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Poets before securing a commanding 4-0 win against the Leopards, bringing their season record to 5-5.
Game One Analysis: Gustavus vs. Whittier Poets
In their opening match, the Gusties seized the lead early on. In the third inning, Lauren Lambert initiated the scoring with a double to left center, allowing her teammate Hailey Petzel to bring home the first run with an RBI single.
However, the Poets countered aggressively, tallying four runs in their half of the inning through a sequence of solid hits, including a home run, shifting the score to 4-2 in their favor.
In a resilient response, the Gusties tied the game in the fourth inning. With players on second and third, Olivia Guggenberger delivered a clutch RBI single to equalize at 4-4.
Whittier regained the lead shortly after with another run, and then increased their advantage to 6-4. Yet, Gustavus was not to be outdone. In the sixth inning, the Gusties stormed back, scoring three runs to take the lead. Lambert’s triple, followed by a sac fly from Guggenberger and crucial hits from Caitlin Olafsson and Petzel, culminated in a pivotal game-winning run scored by Madison Westover.
Petzel shone not only at the plate, where she went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, but also on the mound in relief, allowing only two runs in five innings while striking out four batters.
Game Two Analysis: Gustavus vs. La Verne Leopards
The Gusties showcased their offensive prowess once again in the second game, taking an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Caitlin Olafsson opened the scoring with a lead-off home run, her second of the season. With two outs and runners on second and third, Madison Westover delivered a powerful three-run homer, solidifying Gustavus’s lead.
On the defensive side, Ava Hamsund pitched masterfully, completing the game with a shutout and only two hits allowed, while striking out three batters over seven innings.
Looking Ahead
The Gusties are set to face a tougher challenge next, taking on the No. 4 nationally ranked University of Redlands Bulldogs in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 3. Fans can catch the live action starting at 12:00 p.m. local time on the west coast, or 2:00 p.m. in Minnesota.
