Stonehill Women’s Lacrosse Faces Defeat Against California

BERKELEY, Calif. (March 9, 2026) – The Stonehill College women’s lacrosse team concluded its non-conference schedule with a 17-10 loss to the California Golden Bears at California Memorial Stadium. This defeat leaves the Skyhawks with a record of 3-5 for the season while the Golden Bears improved to 4-5.

Stonehill Highlights

The Skyhawks showcased several strong performances, notably from their senior players:

  • Natalie Coutu emerged as the offensive leader, recording three goals and one assist, marking her second four-point game of the season.
  • Grace Murphy continued to be a standout, achieving her sixth multi-goal game by scoring three times for the fourth time this season.
  • Sophia Gouveia, the rookie sensation, netted her 15th goal of the season while also leading the team with five draw controls.
  • Contributions came from Abby Hanifin, Jennaveve Koch, and Taylor Green, who scored their second, sixth, and ninth goals of the season, respectively.
  • In goal, Nina Tremonte made an impressive 10 saves, while Kalliopi Maniatis led the team with three ground balls.

Game Summary

The match started with California asserting itself early, establishing a 3-0 lead. However, Stonehill responded with late goals from Murphy and Hanifin, narrowing the gap to 4-3 by the end of the first quarter, thanks to Coutu’s closing goal.

In the second quarter, the teams battled fiercely, with Koch equalizing at 4-4. Nonetheless, California regained momentum, scoring three unanswered goals to sit ahead 7-4. Coutu’s late first-half goal brought the score to 7-5.

Stonehill came out strong in the third quarter, tying the game at 7-7 with quick goals from Murphy and Gouveia. Tremonte made crucial saves, but California managed to maintain a narrow lead of 8-7 by the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter saw California dominate, scoring nine times to Stonehill’s three. Coutu and Murphy both completed their hat tricks, but the Skyhawks were unable to recover, ultimately falling 17-10.

Looking Ahead

Stonehill (3-5, 0-0 NEC) will transition to conference play, beginning with a match against Le Moyne (5-1, 0-0 NEC) on Saturday, March 14, at 11 a.m.
