High School Sports Champions Crowned in Sacramento

This past weekend in Sacramento, high school basketball and soccer teams showcased their skills at the CIF state championships, culminating in thrilling victories and new titles for multiple Southern California schools.

Basketball Highlights

In an exhilarating series of games at the Golden 1 Center, Southern California’s basketball prowess was on full display. Sierra Canyon emerged victorious in the Open Division Boys Championship, defeating Richmond Salesian 78-70. In the Open Division Girls Championship, Ontario Christian claimed victory over Archbishop Mitty with a score of 56-49, thanks to a standout performance from junior guard Kaleena Smith. For more details on this game, click here.

In the realm of soccer, the results were equally compelling. Although Garfield lost 2-0 in the Division V State Boys Final against Branson, sophomore goalkeeper Javier Zarate made a strong impression throughout the tournament. Discover more about his contributions here.

Mater Dei cemented its reputation as a soccer powerhouse by clinching both the boys’ and girls’ Division I State Titles; the boys defeated Salinas Everett Alvarez 2-1, while the girls secured a 2-0 win against the previously undefeated Bishop O’Dowd. Los Alamitos won the Division III Boys Championship with a 1-0 win over Watsonville, while Irvine University triumphed in Division IV, winning 3-2.
