Stellar Performance at AACI Regional Competition

The Yelm High School advanced sports medicine program achieved remarkable success in Pasadena, California, at the American Academic Competition Institute (AACI) Regional competition held on March 14. The dedicated team of 12 members claimed first place in the medium school-size division, showcasing their hard work and talent in a highly competitive environment.

An Unforgettable Experience

Upon arriving in California on March 12, the team immersed themselves in a variety of recreational activities, which included visiting iconic locations such as Hollywood, the Oscars set, Santa Monica Beach, and Universal Studios. Miera and fellow team member Cali Stein reflected positively on the experience, emphasizing the importance of bonding and creating lifelong memories.

“The experience in California was amazing and the recreational activities really brought us closer,” said Stein. “I was thrilled to place fourth in the oral practical, showcasing the results of our hard work.”

Despite their extensive preparation, many team members initially had low expectations going into the competition. Miera expressed concerns about feeling underprepared, particularly regarding potential California-specific questions.

Overcoming Doubts to Achieve Success

“There was a lot of anxiety regarding our performance,” Riutta admitted. “I even felt unsure about my knowledge of medical terminology, but once we got into the routines, everything clicked.”

With determination and resilience, the team excelled in the competition. Stein shared her emotional response upon hearing their victory announcement: “It was overwhelming joy. When we learned we placed first overall in our category, I screamed louder than I ever have before. It was incredibly rewarding.”

Looking Forward: Upcoming State Championship

The Yelm High School advanced sports medicine team is preparing for the state championship competition, scheduled for April 16-18 at the Tacoma Convention Center. Clinton noted the team’s focus on achieving a top-three finish, building on their California success.

The forthcoming competition will involve a slightly different format, with 14 students participating in five distinct events. Rather than relying on the entire team, the focus will shift to individual performances contributing to the overall team score.
