EUREKA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s College rowing team showcased their prowess at the Blue Heron Humboldt Regatta, delivering exceptional performances across various boat categories on Saturday, with victories from the Women’s Varsity 8+, 3V8+, and 1V4+ boats.

Strong Start for the Gaels

The day commenced with a commanding victory from the 1V8+ squad, featuring coxswain Mavis Read-Kinney alongside teammates Carolyn Huckel, Maria Moreno Roque, Fiona Samuelson, Katelyn Robertson, Lia Segrest, Danijela Concion, Chloe Casement, and Kelly Nelson. Despite facing an equipment challenge late in the race, the Gaels secured victory with a time of 6:27.177, outpacing Humboldt State by over six seconds. Meanwhile, the 2V8+ boat displayed resilience and narrowly lost to the Humboldt 1V8+, finishing just three seconds behind.

Rising Stars Shine

In the 3V8+ race, coxswain Sophia Camarosano led her team, which included Emma Lopez, Fiona Moore, Sofia Martyniuk, Corinne McGrath, Alaynnah Flores, Gabriella Honig, Ashlynn Croarkin, and Claire Gonzalez. They clinched first place with a time of 6:46.480, defeating their competitors by six seconds.

Dominance in the Varsity 4+

The Women’s Varsity 4+ boats also delivered stellar performances in their final race of the day. The first team, guided by coxswain Rachel Fry, included Lilah Marble, Avery Britton, Gwyneth O’Brien, and Kate Hurd finished first with a time of 8:16.328. The second boat, under coxswain Alondra Aguirre, featuring Maya Nordberg, Alyssa Terry, Lea Glafkides, and Alexa Hernandez, followed closely, finishing in 8:21.097, an impressive win over Humboldt by more than 14 seconds.

Promising Future Ahead

The novice 4+ boat, with coxswain Sophia Cammarosano, alongside teammates Gabriella Honig, Alaynnah Flores, Ady Beloian, and Lucinda Santos, secured second place in their race, finishing behind Puget Sound but still beating Humboldt by an impressive 27 seconds.

Head Coach Brian Ebke expressed his pride in the team’s performance, stating, “We appreciate this race because Humboldt is a really good, consistent team at the top of the Division II ranks. We’ve raced them a lot in the last four years, so they are a good benchmark for us. It was thrilling to see our team step up, win multiple races, and compete effectively across several classes.”
