Saint Mary’s Baseball Team Prepares for Key Matchups Against Cal and Pacific

MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s Gaels baseball team is gearing up for an exciting week eight of the college baseball season. The Gaels will first take on the Cal Golden Bears in a crucial midweek contest, marking one of two meetings between the two teams this season. Then, they will return home to Moraga for a West Coast Conference series against the Pacific Tigers, starting Thursday.

Recent Performance Breakdown

Last week, Saint Mary’s had a balanced outing, finishing with a 2-2 record across four games, which included victories over UC Santa Barbara and Portland. Currently, the Gaels hold a 2-4 standing in West Coast Conference play after six matchups. This weekend, they will look to extend their impressive nine-game winning streak against the Tigers, a record dating back to 2023. The games will be hosted at the Louis Guisto Field at Br. Ronald Gallagher Stadium.

Player Highlights

John Damozonio: Ace of the Staff

Senior right-hander John Damozonio has proven to be a vital asset for the Gaels. Last week, he achieved a career-high nine strikeouts during a 3-0 shutout victory against Portland. With a current season ERA of 2.37, Damozonio shares the conference lead with four wins and showcases impressive stats, including 40 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched.

Jared Mettam: Offensive Catalyst

Senior shortstop Jared Mettam has also been instrumental, contributing significantly at the plate. Over the past week, he recorded eight hits, including a home run and a team-high six RBIs. His key performances helped him maintain a .333 batting average and extend his hit streak to five games. Mettam’s defensive skills shone through as well, with six putouts and no errors over four games.

Staff Day Success Against UCSB

In their matchup against UC Santa Barbara, head coach Eric Valenzuela implemented a “staff day” strategy, utilizing nine different pitchers throughout the game. This collective effort led to one of the Gaels’ best performances of the season, exemplifying the depth within their pitching staff.

Series History: Saint Mary’s vs. Cal

The Gaels and Golden Bears have split their last four encounters. In 2025, Saint Mary’s managed a strong comeback, defeating Cal 10-4 after an earlier home loss. Historically, Saint Mary’s holds a record of 13-18 against Cal dating back to 2000. The Gaels are eager to secure a two-game winning streak against the Golden Bears for the first time since the 2021-2022 seasons.

Pacific Tigers: The Next Challenge

The Tigers are currently standing at 10-17 with a 2-4 record in the WCC. Despite a rocky start, including losses in their opening series against Seattle U and Gonzaga, Pacific aims for a breakout. They possess the offensive capability to contend, led by redshirt sophomore Robert Orr, who is hitting .333 this season.

Fans can catch the Tuesday game against Cal on ACCNX, while the weekend series against Pacific will be available on ESPN+.
