Saint Mary’s Softball Stuns Washington, Extends Win Streak

STANFORD, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s Gaels softball team made headlines on the first day of the Stanford Round Robin by defeating the formidable Washington Huskies, snapping their impressive 20-game winning streak with a commanding 5-2 victory. This marked the Gaels’ first ranked win since 2017, elevating their current win streak to 11 games—a record for the program and the third longest in the nation.

Dominant Performance by Odhi Vasquez

Odhi Vasquez showcased an outstanding pitching performance, completing the game with a season-high 11 strikeouts and allowing only three hits against a potent Washington lineup. This victory was her 13th win of the season and marked her unbeaten streak at 16 games—a remarkable achievement in collegiate softball.

Key Contributors

In addition to Vasquez’s stellar pitching, Hannah Ferguson stood out offensively, going 2-for-3 with two infield singles and scoring a crucial run. Meanwhile, Sam Buckley and Alex Cutonilli each made significant contributions in the sixth inning, with Buckley hitting a triple and Cutonilli launching a home run over the center field fence.

How the Game Unfolded

Although Washington entered the game with an impressive batting average of .340, Vasquez silenced their bats with remarkable control, not allowing a hit through the first three innings. The Huskies broke the silence in the fourth with a two-run home run, followed by two hit batsmen and a double that put them ahead 2-0.

Starting in the sixth inning, the Gaels’ offense erupted, scoring all five of their runs in one fell swoop. After Ferguson’s infield single and subsequent movements on base, Buckley’s triple and Cutonilli’s homer turned the tide, leading Saint Mary’s to an unexpected lead and eventual victory.

Game Highlights

  • First Ranked Win Since 2017: This victory is the Gaels’ first against a ranked opponent since defeating BYU in May 2017.
  • Impressive Win Streak: The Gaels’ 11-game winning streak is now the third longest in the country, having ended Washington’s impressive undefeated run.
  • Outstanding Pitching by Vasquez: Odhi Vasquez’s pitching not only included 11 strikeouts but also stands as her first double-digit strikeout game of the current season.
  • Notable Offensive Achievements: Ferguson leads the team with 15 multi-hit games this season and scored her 34th run, placing her in the top ten for single-season program history. In addition, Cutonilli hit her fourth home run, and Buckley’s triple ties her for fourth most in school history.

Upcoming Challenges

The Gaels will face aggressive competition tomorrow at Stanford Softball Stadium. They will take on Washington once more at 2 p.m., followed by a matchup against the Stanford Cardinal at 5 p.m.

Stay tuned as the Gaels continue their thrilling journey through the Stanford Round Robin, with hopes of extending their win streak and gaining even more momentum in their season.
