Record Rain and Snow in Northern California: Seasonal Boosts Expected
As the recent storm system diminishes, Northern California is witnessing remarkable rain and snow totals that have significantly boosted seasonal rainfall statistics. This weather event has brought welcomed moisture, enhancing water supply figures in the region.
Rainfall Totals in the Valley
Since Thursday, valley locations have recorded varying rainfall amounts: Modesto saw about 0.5 inches, while both Sacramento and Stockton received approximately 1.3 inches. These totals, while generally manageable for the lower elevations, resulted in severe weather conditions in some foothill communities, which experienced heavy downpours leading to localized flood advisories. In some areas, storm totals surpassed 4 inches.
Improvement in Water Year Statistics
This recent precipitation has positively impacted water year standings across the region. Sacramento has reached around 85% of average levels for this time of year. In contrast, Stockton boasts 112%, and Modesto stands at 109%. These figures reflect the importance of the rainfall in meeting seasonal water needs.
Snowfall in the Sierra Nevada
The storm also delivered substantial snowfall in the Sierra Nevada, particularly around the Lake Tahoe area. As temperatures dropped, rain transformed into snow, resulting in impressive totals reported by local SNOTEL stations.
- Truckee: 16 inches of snow
- Palisades Tahoe: Nearly 3 feet
- Carson Pass and Heavenly Valley: Approximately 2 feet each
- Mount Rose: Close to 1.5 feet
Continuing Impact in the Sierra
Though the primary impacts of the storm lessened by early Monday morning, some lingering showers may persist, particularly in the Sierra as the system continues to shift moisture from the northeast back into the mountains. While conditions for the valleys are improving, the Sierra will likely feel the storm’s residual effects for a bit longer.
