LUBBOCK, Texas – In a thrilling weekend for the Lubbock Christian University (LCU) track and field teams, athletes showcased their talents at two different events. The teams primarily competed at the Greyhound Open in Portales, New Mexico, while standout performer Olivia Weider made her mark at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.
Olivia Weider Sets New Program Record
In a remarkable display of athleticism, Olivia Weider set a new program record in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Weider clocked in at 10:53.80, surpassing the previous record held by Amira Cunningham since 2018. This provisional mark not only demonstrates Weider’s exceptional talent but also adds to LCU’s reputation in collegiate track and field.
Strong showings at the Greyhound Open
The Greyhound Open featured a plethora of events, primarily focusing on field events for LCU competitors. Shelby Robinson achieved the best finish for the women’s team, securing fifth place in the discus with a throw of 39.51 meters.
Notable Performances in Field Events
- Matilda Galvan, a freshman, excelled in the triple jump, placing sixth with a distance of 11.30 meters.
- Faizah Ford, a sophomore, achieved a personal record, finishing eighth in the same event with a mark of 10.87 meters.
- Esperanza Cruz also shone in the javelin throw, recording her best throw in a month at 35.50 meters, landing her in sixth position.
Men’s Event Highlights at the Greyhound Open
The men’s section of the Greyhound Open saw LCU athletes demonstrating their capabilities, particularly in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Aiden Zingone emerged victorious, clocking in at 10:12.25, marking the third-best time of his career.
The Competitive 1500-Meter Field
LCU had a significant presence in the 1500-meter race, spearheaded by Samuel Bryan, who finished second with a time of 4:08.01. His teammates, Gavin Morrison and Kaleb Gaona, also made waves, both finishing within the top five of the event.
Field Event Achievements
On the field side, Maurice Gray demonstrated versatility with a fourth-place finish in the long jump and a second-place finish in the triple jump, despite not achieving personal bests. However, teammate Mark Balizan recorded a personal best of 12.0 meters in the triple jump, finishing fourth.
