West Texas A&M Track & Field Sets Three New Records at Bryan Clay Invitational

CANYON, Texas – This past weekend, the West Texas A&M Track & Field team showcased exceptional talent, establishing three new school records at the Bryan Clay Invitational held in Azusa, California.

Lady Buffs Excel in 10K and 1,500m

On Thursday, the distance squad made headlines as two Lady Buffs achieved provisional marks in the 10,000 meters. Naomi Addo clocked an impressive time of 34:19.16, securing 14th place overall. Following closely was Kalkidan Vincendeau, finishing in 22nd place with a time of 34:39.55. Vincendeau also represented the school in the 1,500 meters, completing the race in 4:29.75 for a 61st place finish.

Later that evening, Tobias Ritter wrapped up Thursday’s events with a notable performance in the men’s 10K, finishing 10th in his heat with a time of 29:27.56, meeting NCAA provisional standards.

Outstanding Performances in 5K and 800m

Moving into Friday, Fintan Kavanagh participated in the 5,000 meters, recording a time of 14:32.51. Meanwhile, Tommaso Toppi secured 14th place in the same event with a mark of 14:26.38.

A standout moment of the weekend came when Abigail Abugire captivated spectators with the second fastest time in NCAA Division II women’s outdoor history in the 800 meters, clocking in at 2:01.79. This impressive performance earned her first place in the women’s invite division, which included 134 participants. Sierra Cornell also made her mark by finishing 100th with a provisional time of 2:09.37.

In the men’s invite division of the 800 meters, Emil Meggle set the second school record of the day, securing 8th overall with a time of 1:47.72. Additionally, Adrian Solis achieved a noteworthy 1:51.94 in the open division of the 800 meters, finishing 60th, and placed 37th in the 1,500 meters with a mark of 3:56.00.

Remarkable Records by Abugire and Tangara

Concluding the weekend events, Abugire delivered another outstanding performance, breaking her second school record by running the 1,500 meters in 4:13.03, surpassing the previous record by over 11 seconds and finishing fourth in the invite division. Sarah Koomson also placed impressively by recording a provisional time of 4:23.78 in the 1,500 meters and 16:28.33 in the 5K.

Additionally, freshman Emiliia Tangara showcased her talent at the Mt. Sac Relays, competing in the 400-meter hurdles. She recorded the second fastest time in WT outdoor history with a completion of 56.50, ending the race in second place in the elite division.

Upcoming Events

The Buffs and Lady Buffs are approaching the end of their regular season outdoor schedule. They are set to participate in the Michael Johnson Invite hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas, on Friday and Saturday. For more updates and details, follow their official track and field page.
