Shaping the Future: Markos Kounalakis and California’s Geopolitical Influence

Markos Kounalakis believes strongly that California has a pivotal role in shaping the future of geopolitics. As the first-ever “Second Gentleman” of the state—his wife, Eleni Kounalakis, serves as lieutenant governor—he aims to position California not just as a regional player, but as a global powerhouse.

From Refugee Roots to Global Insight

Born to Greek refugees who fled their home country during the Nazi occupation, Kounalakis was raised in a working-class household in San Francisco. His father, Antonio, was a resistance fighter and later transitioned to working as a bus mechanic and construction truck owner in the U.S. Meanwhile, his mother, Vasiliki, held down night shifts at Bank of America to support the family.

Education as a Turning Point

Kounalakis’ pursuit of higher education marked a significant turning point in his life. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1978 with a degree in political science, entering through the Educational Opportunity Program, which supports first-generation and underrepresented students. “It wasn’t anticipated or even expected that I would go to college,” he reflected on his educational journey.

Driven by a continuous thirst for knowledge, Kounalakis later earned a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1988 and a Ph.D. in international relations from Central European University in 2016. His academic pursuits demonstrate his commitment to lifelong learning and scholarship.

A Career in Journalism and International Affairs

Kounalakis carved out a notable career in journalism, serving as a foreign affairs correspondent in several countries, including Austria, Italy, and the Soviet Union. He covered crucial historical events such as the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and the fall of the Berlin Wall. “Markos is a humanist at heart,” said fellow journalist Peter Laufer, highlighting Kounalakis’ empathetic approach to covering complex sociopolitical events.

Kounalakis’ experiences have endowed him with a unique understanding of foreign affairs. He emphasizes the necessity of engaging with a diverse array of media to grasp international dynamics fully. “I try not to engage strictly with English-language media because that is what makes a difference,” he noted, underscoring the importance of a broad perspective in analyzing global trends.

Promoting Democratic Values

His commitment to promoting democratic values and integrity in government is reflected in his work with the Hoover Institution. Notably, his 2018 publication, Spin Wars & Spy Games: Global Media and Intelligence Gathering, showcases his dedication to these principles, according to research fellow David Berkey.

California: A Geopolitical Superpower

Kounalakis has firmly grounded himself in California, seeing it as a land of opportunity. “It was by accident, good fortune, good people who helped me along the way,” he explained. He currently supports his wife in her role as lieutenant governor, the first woman and American of Greek descent to hold the office.

With California recently becoming the world’s fourth-largest economy, as announced by Governor Gavin Newsom, Kounalakis has been exploring how the state operates on the global stage. His course at Stanford, “Superpower California,” delves into California’s impact on the international arena, encouraging students to consider how subnational entities can influence global affairs.

Global Standards and Future Innovation

Kounalakis argues that California often sets global standards, from emissions regulations to technology governance. “Even though the financial power center may be in New York and political power is mostly concentrated in Washington, D.C., the future is based right in California,” he asserted, emphasizing the state’s unique position for innovation and influence.

A Life of Curiosity and Adventure

When not engaging in scholarly pursuits or writing on geopolitical trends, Kounalakis enjoys riding his Ducati motorcycle which he describes as a source of freedom. His son, Neo Kounalakis, observes his father’s adventurous spirit and thirst for learning, a trait that he believes has influenced his own growth.

With both a passion for inquiry and a commitment to sociopolitical engagement, Markos Kounalakis embodies the Californian ideal of constantly seeking to shape a better future for all—one that remains open to the dreams and ambitions of hard-working individuals and immigrants alike.

Conclusion: California’s Role in the Future

Markos Kounalakis envisions a formative role for California in shaping global standards and practices, reflecting the state’s unique combination of opportunities and resources. His life story serves as an inspiring example of how resilience, curiosity, and a commitment to democratic values can create pathways for individuals and communities to thrive.
