Upcoming Storm to Bring Heavy Rain and Mudslide Risks to Southern California

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – A significant storm is approaching Southern California, posing a threat of substantial rainfall and potential mudslides in areas that have recently experienced wildfires.

Rain Forecast and Timing

Rainfall is anticipated to begin late Thursday evening, with the heaviest precipitation expected on Friday and Saturday. This wet weather system is projected to linger through the weekend and may continue into early next week. Notably, regions impacted by recent wildfires, including Altadena and Pacific Palisades, could accumulate over 2.5 inches of rain by Saturday night.

Thursday Weather Overview

On Thursday, Los Angeles and Orange counties will experience cloudy skies with a 60% chance of rain in the evening. The daytime highs are projected to reach around 72°F, dropping to a low of 56°F at night.

Similarly, the Inland Empire and valley regions will face comparable conditions with highs near 74°F and lows around 53°F. The storm’s initial rain will arrive late Thursday, possibly resulting in rainfall amounts of up to 3 inches by Friday.

  • Beaches: Expected highs of 66°F with a low of 58°F, and rain totals of about 1 inch.
  • Mountains: Anticipated highs of 59°F and lows of 34°F, with rain—no significant snowfall expected initially.
  • Deserts: Expect around 1/2 inch to 1 inch of rain with highs reaching 74°F and lows of 47°F.

Extended Rainfall Predictions

The storm will ramp up overnight into Friday morning, with the bulk of the rain likely moving in by Saturday. Light showers could persist across the area on Sunday, Monday, and possibly into Tuesday, creating ongoing risks for areas previously affected by wildfires.
