California Golden Bears Triumph Over No. 14 North Carolina: 84-78

BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears claimed a significant victory over No. 14 North Carolina with an 84-78 finish at Haas Pavilion. This victory marks California’s first win against a top-15 opponent since 2016, demonstrating their growth and potential in the conference.

The game showcased standout performances from several Golden Bears. John Camden shone brightly, contributing 20 points, while Dai Dai Ames and Justin Pippen added 19 points each. Collectively, these three players accounted for a whopping 58 points. Additionally, Lee Dort dominated on the boards, securing a game-high 12 rebounds.

North Carolina’s offensive effort was led by Caleb Wilson, who scored 17 points. Help came from teammates Henri Veesaar and Derek Dixon, each contributing 14 points, while Seth Trimble added 12 points.

First-Half Dominance

The Golden Bears started strong, establishing a 7-0 lead early, powered by a combination of solid inside play from Lee Dort and a three-pointer from John Camden. After the Tar Heels tied the game at 10-10, California unleashed an 11-0 run, highlighted by a fadeaway from DeJuan Campbell and a three-pointer from Milos Ilic.

At halftime, California led convincingly at 54-37, shooting an impressive 55.9% from the field and making 10 three-pointers. In contrast, North Carolina shot 50%, showcasing a competitive first half.

Tense Second Half

The second half brought increased intensity, with North Carolina launching an 18-3 run that momentarily reduced California’s lead. However, the Bears countered effectively, maintaining composure under pressure.

California continued to shoot well, finishing the game with a 50% field goal percentage and sinking 14 three-pointers, compared to North Carolina’s 46.4% shooting and nine three-pointers.

Last-Minute Drama

As the clock wound down, North Carolina clawed their way back, narrowing the gap to a mere three points with 18.6 seconds remaining. However, Justin Pippen remained clutch at the free throw line, hitting crucial shots to secure the victory for the Golden Bears and wrapping the game at 84-78.

Coach’s Commentary

Head Coach Mark Madsen expressed his appreciation for the team’s effort and resilience, stating, “We’re trying to build something special here at Cal, and it takes everybody. The environment was great, and North Carolina did a fantastic job making us uncomfortable. Credit to our guys for stepping up in critical moments.”
