Cal Bears Tennis Aims for Redemption After ITA Kickoff Weekend Losses
Last week, the California Golden Bears faced a challenging start to the season during ITA Kickoff Weekend, suffering their first defeats against No. 17 Oklahoma and No. 21 USC, with scores of 2-4 and 1-4, respectively. As the Bears prepare for another crucial weekend, they aim to turn their fortunes around at the Hellman Tennis Complex, where they will host three prominent California rivals.
Key Matchup: Cal Bears vs. USC Trojans
The Bears are eager to avenge their recent loss against the USC Trojans. Despite not having any ranked players, USC demonstrated their strength in singles play, with four Cal players—junior Timofey Stepanov, sophomore Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski, sophomore Bernardo Munk Mesa, and freshman Andrea Meduri—each falling to Trojan opponents.
“Last week’s matchup against USC provided us with valuable lessons,” reflects Munk Mesa. “We’re all hungry for a rematch.”
Battling the Rival: UCLA Bruins
Following the clash with USC, the No. 15 ranked Bears will face a formidable challenge from the No. 10 UCLA Bruins. The rivalry between these two teams has a rich history and intense competition, particularly from their previous meetings. In their last confrontation during the NCAA Super Regionals last May, Cal not only faced a strong Bruins lineup but also struggled under the pressure of the clinch rule.
“The clinch point can change your style of play,” Munk Mesa explains. “You need to finish quickly to secure the clinch, which often isn’t the ideal approach.”
Looking ahead, Munk Mesa knows that learning from last year’s experiences will be crucial for success.
UCLA’s Dominance
The UCLA Bruins come prepared, featuring three ranked players—No. 20 Eamon Van Loben Sels, No. 53 Rudy Quan, and No. 75 Spencer Johnson. In doubles, Cal duo Stepanov and Silva currently hold a ranking of No. 55, while UCLA’s pairs include No. 19 Johnson/Van Loben Sels and No. 47 Quan/Tripathi. Historically, UCLA has posed a significant challenge for Cal, with the Bears holding a record of 12 wins against 37 losses.
Preparing for UC Davis
After a challenging showdown against UCLA, the Bears will take on UC Davis, who, although unranked, promises a competitive match. The Aggies may lack individual rankings, but that does not diminish their potential threat on the court.
“We need to bring our best game, not just for ourselves but for the fans,” insists Munk Mesa.
A Weekend of Rivalries
This upcoming weekend is set to be a crucial one for the Cal Bears, filled with rematches and intense rivalries in California tennis. With the stakes high and an eager fan base supporting them, the Bears are determined to rise from their recent setbacks and showcase their resilience on their home turf.
