Sophie Scott Honored with CalHOPE Courage Award for Resilience in Volleyball

Overcoming Adversity: A Journey Back to the Court

California volleyball standout Sophie Scott has been named an honoree for the prestigious CalHOPE Courage Award. This award recognizes student-athletes across California who show exceptional resilience in overcoming personal hardships and injury-related adversities.

Established in 2022 by CalHOPE, a critical mental and behavioral health support resource provided by the California Department of Health Care Services, the award showcases the significance of mental health awareness in athletics. Scott’s honor puts her in contention for the overall CalHOPE Courage Award for the 2025-26 season, to be awarded to one male and one female athlete in May 2026.

A Remarkable Comeback

Sophie Scott’s journey is not just about athletic achievement; it’s a testament to her strength. After enduring four knee surgeries over the past six years, including severe injuries to her left ACL, left MCL, and both menisci that took away her senior year of high school volleyball, Scott joined the California Bears in Fall 2022. Her determination shone through as she quickly made a mark on the team, earning a starting position and finishing among the top ten blockers in the Pac-12.

However, challenges persisted. A meniscus cleanup surgery in Spring 2023 sidelined her for half of her sophomore season. Despite these setbacks, Scott fought her way back, recording impressive statistics in blocks during conference play. Just as she began to find her groove, a torn right ACL benched her for the entirety of her junior year.

Supporting Others While Facing Personal Trials

With the backing of her teammates, coaches, and the medical team, Scott gradually reclaimed her position. Now a senior, she is not only focused on contributing to her team’s success—whether as a starter or off the bench—but is also managing personal challenges. Recently, she has taken on the responsibility of supporting her father, who has been diagnosed with cancer.

“Sophie is very deserving of this award,” said Head Coach Jen Malcom. “Her journey exemplifies courage and determination. Despite the risk of further injury, she is committed to making a positive impact on her team.”

Recognizing Resilience in Athletic Excellence

To celebrate Scott’s achievements, CalHOPE has pledged a donation to the American Cancer Society in her name. Furthermore, she will receive recognition on the court before the California Bears match against No. 3 Pitt, highlighting her extraordinary resilience and spirit.

Previous CalHOPE Award Honorees

Scott joins an esteemed group of athletes who have received recognition through this award:

  • Amaya Gray & Anysa Gray (Women’s Soccer) – October 2022 Honorees; 2022-23 Winners
  • Brett Johnson (Football) – January 2024 Honoree
  • Darren Wong (Men’s Gymnastics) – April 2024 Honoree
  • Mya Wang (Lacrosse) – September 2024 Honoree; 2024-25 Winner
