Cleanup Efforts Underway in Wrightwood After Severe Storm Damage

Heavy Rains Cause Major Disruptions

Cleanup operations are actively being conducted in Wrightwood following a severe storm that resulted in heavy rainfall and subsequent mudslides. This extreme weather has led to significant damage, including power outages affecting thousands of Southern California Edison customers.

Evacuation Warnings Lifted

As a response to the storm’s aftermath, all evacuation warnings in the Wrightwood area were lifted on Friday, allowing residents to return and evaluate the impact of the Christmas Eve storm.

Visual Evidence of the Damage

Dramatic footage from the scene shows Oriole Road buried under debris, where a torrent of water carried mud, debris, and charred wood down the mountainside and into nearby homes. Watch the video here to see the extent of the destruction.

Streets and Vehicles Overwhelmed

Several feet of mud inundated vehicles, and local streets are left coated with a thick layer of rain-soaked sludge. The area, previously scarred by the Bridge Fire in 2024, is particularly vulnerable due to soil erosion, which exacerbates flooding risks.

Community Impact and Responses

Insights from Local Authorities

Ryan Beckers from San Bernardino County Fire explained the challenges posed by the storm: “With the area being softened by burn scars, it holds less water. Natural channels become overwhelmed, leading to severe runoff and mudslides.”

Power Restoration Challenges

Currently, nearly 3,000 Southern California Edison customers are still without power. Restoration efforts are complicated by the ongoing inaccessibility of some areas, potentially delaying the restoration of services.

Roadway Conditions and Safety Precautions

While Highway 2 and the 138 Freeway are now open, certain sections require reinforcement to ensure safety. Power lines in various locations remain precariously supported by maintenance trucks as crews begin repairs.

Ongoing Monitoring and Preparation

Local officials are remaining vigilant. “We are in watch mode and have deployed extra crews today,” Beckers stated. “We have teams stationed here and in Lytle Creek in case of any further incidents.”

Lytle Creek Residents Affected

In nearby Lytle Creek, residents are grappling with damage as well, with over 100 residents in the Happy Jack neighborhood cut off after their only access road was washed away. As local resident Amber Guerrero stated, “The rainfall, rocks, and debris completely washed away the bridge.”

Final Thoughts

As cleanup efforts continue, local communities remain on high alert for any additional rainfall. This ongoing vigilance is crucial for safeguarding lives and property in the wake of the storm.
