Washington State Cougars Prepare for Showdown Against Struggling UC San Diego Tritons

The Washington State Cougars are looking to bounce back this weekend after a challenging 6-3 loss to the top-ranked team in the Pac-8. As they gear up to face the UC San Diego Tritons, currently languishing at the bottom of the standings with a 4-13 record and a 1-10 conference mark, the Cougars aim to capitalize on their opponent’s struggles.

Strong Performance from the Cougars

Despite their recent setback, the Cougars’ last outing showcased one of their most comprehensive efforts of the season. Washington State demonstrated skill in all areas, securing goals from both seasoned players and newcomers, excelling in penalty kills, and showing effectiveness in power plays. A highlight of their recent performance was their resilience, keeping pace with Western for the majority of the game, which instilled confidence within the team. With Washington State firing on all cylinders, they pose a serious challenge for the Tritons.

UC San Diego’s Offensive Woes

On the other hand, UC San Diego has had a rough season offensively, managing to score just 40 goals in their first 14 games. Their leading scorers are all tied, with only 12 points each, indicating a significant struggle to find the back of the net. This lack of offensive production may present an opportunity for the Cougars to take control of the game.

Goaltending Challenges

Goalkeeper Alexei Kuhl of Washington State is looking to regain his form after hitting a rough patch at the start of the new year. Kuhl has seen his save percentage dip below .900 in his last five games, including a challenging 10-0 defeat against the University of Washington. However, prior to this decline, he had excelled, boasting a save percentage above .900 in seven of his last nine appearances. As Kuhl faces a struggling offense this weekend, he aims to regain his confidence, helping to push the Cougars toward a playoff spot in just two weeks.

Conversely, UCSD’s goaltending situation hasn’t fared much better. Matthew Mahlow, the Tritons’ starter, has recorded a save percentage of .857 while allowing an average of over seven goals per game. Despite this, he has been pivotal in securing three victories for UCSD this season, proving he can be a difference-maker when called upon.

Recent Extra Game Against Division-I Competition

In preparation for their weekend matchup, Washington State engaged in an additional game against Division-I San Diego State on Thursday night. They managed to hold their own for the first two periods but ultimately fell 5-1. This experience could serve as valuable preparation as they head into their series against UC San Diego.

Game Day Information

Washington State will face off against UC San Diego in the first game of their weekend series on Friday night at 9:45 PM at Aliso Viejo Ice Palace. This matchup presents a prime opportunity for the Cougars to capitalize on their opponent’s weaknesses and build momentum as the season progresses.

As both teams look to make their mark in the Pac-8, fans can expect an intense matchup that could have significant implications for both sides. Follow the game and witness how the dynamics unfold on the ice.
