Southern California Man Arrested for Alleged Ransom Demand in Connection With Missing Nancy Guthrie

Federal authorities have taken significant action against Derrick Callella, a man from Southern California, who has been arrested for allegedly transmitting a false ransom demand related to the case of missing Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie.

Details of the Disappearance

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing from her home near Tucson, Arizona, on February 1. Her family last saw her on the evening of January 31, and her absence triggered immediate concern. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed investigators have yet to identify any suspects or persons of interest as of February 5. In a troubling twist, blood found on the porch of her home has been confirmed through DNA testing to belong to her.

Arrest of Derrick Callella

The FBI announced the arrest of Callella in Hawthorne, California, close to Los Angeles International Airport, in a press release issued on February 5. He faces multiple charges, including transmitting a ransom demand in interstate commerce without disclosing his identity and using a telecommunications device to harass a person. These charges stem from a criminal complaint filed in federal court.

According to the complaint, Callella sent a text message to Nancy Guthrie’s daughter, Annie Guthrie, and her husband, which read, “Did you get the bitcoin were [sic] waiting on our end of the transaction.” Callella reportedly admitted to sending this communication and to sourcing the family’s contact information from an online forum.

FBI’s Response

U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine commented on the case, stating, “The Department of Justice will protect victims and families at all costs, and grief profiteers will be held accountable.” He emphasized the swift response of the FBI and local law enforcement, which swiftly coordinated efforts within 24 hours to apprehend Callella.

FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge, Heith Janke, also issued a warning to potential scammers, asserting, “To those imposters who are trying to take advantage and profit from this situation – we will investigate and ensure you are held accountable for your actions.”

Investigative Efforts and Rewards

The FBI has launched a comprehensive investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, offering a reward of $50,000 for information leading to her recovery or the identification of individuals involved in her disappearance. The agency encourages anyone with relevant information to reach out at 800-225-5324 or submit a tip through the FBI’s official website.

Ongoing Investigation

As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, law enforcement agencies are urging the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The investigation remains active, with authorities conducting thorough interviews and pursuing leads to ultimately locate Guthrie and understand the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

The collaboration between family, community, and authorities is vital in addressing and managing these distressing situations.
