North Carolina A&T Triumphs Over Hampton in Thrilling NBA HBCU Classic

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – In an exhilarating clash during the Fifth Annual NBA HBCU Classic, North Carolina A&T (A&T) clinched a hard-fought victory against the Hampton Pirates, winning 71-70. The match, held during NBA All-Star Week, ignited jubilation among Aggie fans as their team overcame a nail-biting finale.

A Heart-Stopping Finish

A&T junior guard Trent Middleton, Jr. showcased remarkable composure as he completed a crucial 3-point play with just 4.2 seconds on the clock. The tension reached its peak when Hampton’s Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt attempted a float shot at the buzzer, only for it to roll around the rim and mercifully miss, sealing a win for A&T.

This victory came as a sweet revenge for A&T, who earlier fell to the Pirates 82-61 in their previous matchup on January 19. With this latest win, A&T improved their season record to 10-14 overall and 3-10 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) conference.

Coach Ross Praises Team Resilience

Following the game, A&T head coach Monté Ross reflected on the squad’s resilience. The Aggies faced heartbreak in two prior games, falling to back-to-back buzzer-beaters. “I’ve never had that happen in my 31 years of coaching,” Ross stated. “When that shot went up, I thought it would go in. I was elated when it didn’t because the resiliency these guys have shown all season long deserved this reward.”

Key Moments from the Game

With 17 seconds on the clock, a critical timeout allowed the Aggies to strategize. Middleton expertly navigated the court, exploiting a mismatch against Hampton’s 7-foot center, Josh Ogundele. He skillfully drove to the basket, making a difficult layup while drawing a foul, and converting the ensuing free throw to put A&T ahead.

Middleton finished with 15 points, contributing heavily to the game’s outcome. Redshirt freshman Lewis Walker led A&T with 18 points, proving to be a crucial player throughout the match.

The Final Moments

The game’s final minutes were filled with excitement. After the Pirates had taken a late lead, several key plays showcased A&T’s determination. A particularly stellar effort from Mujahiid Burton resulted in a swift transition from defense to offense, leading to an open dunk by Bryson Ogletree.

Despite Hampton regaining the lead, Middleton’s finesse in executing plays under pressure proved essential in securing the victory. His game-winning free throw underscored his ability to perform in high-stakes situations, and Ross noted Middleton’s development with pride.

Upcoming Matchup Against College of Charleston

Looking ahead, A&T is set to confront the College of Charleston Cougars next. The game is scheduled for February 19, 2026, at 7 P.M. at Corbett Sports Center. The Aggies are eager to continue their momentum and strive for another victory.

This latest win not only boosts A&T’s chances in league play but also reinforces the resolve of a team that is committed to overcoming adversity and pushing forward as the season progresses.
