Husky Softball Sweeps California: Highlights from Week 2
Overview of the Weekend
The Husky Softball team, under the guidance of coach Heather Tarr, had a thriving week in California, showcasing their talent and determination. The team performed exceptionally well against Fresno State and in the Silicon Valley Classic, dominating the competition and building momentum as the season progresses.
Dominance Against Fresno State
Doubleheader Triumph
The journey began with a doubleheader against Fresno State on Friday. The first matchup ended with a commanding 2-0 win for the Huskies. Key to this victory was pitcher Sophia Ramuno, who delivered an outstanding performance. In her complete game shutout, she struck out 8 batters and allowed only 5 hits on 109 pitches.
The scoring kicked off in the first inning when Alexis Deboer hit a solo home run off Bulldog pitcher Lauryn Carranco. Deboer didn’t stop there; she drove in another run later in the game, bringing pinch runner Marley Teasley home with a single. Additionally, Allie Thomsen made headlines by recording her first collegiate hit—a double—during the game.
Game Two: A Decisive Victory
The second game against the Bulldogs was even more impressive, as the Huskies secured a 9-0 victory that concluded in just five innings. The team started slow, but a 2-run double by Ava Carroll in the second inning ignited the offense, netting four runs in that frame alone. Carroll played a pivotal role, driving in five runs and solidifying the Huskies’ dominance.
Amira Rodriguez and Morgan Reimer paired up on the mound for another shutout, with Reimer claiming her second win of the season. Although Rodriguez exited the game due to injury, reports confirmed she walked off under her own power, indicating a potentially minor concern.
Final Game: Complete Sweep
In the third game against Fresno State, the Huskies continued to shine with a 6-1 victory, courtesy of a 4-run fifth inning that sealed the deal. With Ava Carroll driving in four runs and Morgan Reimer earning her third win, the Huskies showcased another level of offensive prowess. Notable moments included Gabi Toney and Carroll hitting home runs, and Kaycie Burdick contributing her first extra-base hit—a triple.
Success at the Silicon Valley Classic
The Huskies continued their strong performance on Sunday, facing San Jose State and securing a 6-1 victory. Kaycie Burdick emerged as a standout player with a perfect 3-3 batting line, bringing in two RBIs and making three key putouts. Giselle Alvarez also shone, contributing two hits and an RBI. The highlight of the game was Gabi Toney’s inside-the-park home run, showcasing the team’s explosive offense.
Final Game Against Santa Clara
The concluding game of the weekend was a resounding 13-0 win against Santa Clara, marked by unique scoring. Five different players rounded the bases with home runs, including Zuri Patterson, who hit her first career homer. Reimer once again shone on the mound, delivering a two-hit complete game shutout, demonstrating the team’s overall prowess.
What’s Next for the Huskies?
The Huskies are set to head to Palm Springs for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, where they will face formidable opponents like South Carolina, Auburn, and Oklahoma. The momentum built during their California trip is sure to serve them well.
