Alexis Vakasiuola Shines at Alice and John Wallace Women’s Golf Classic

Palm Desert, Calif. – Freshman Alexis Vakasiuola made a remarkable impression during her performance at the recent Alice and John Wallace Women’s Golf Classic held at the scenic Monterey Country Club. With a stellar third round featuring five birdies and a score of 4-under-par, she secured second place among 96 competitors, showcasing her potential on a grand stage.

Impressive Performance in the Final Round

In her final 18 holes on Saturday, Vakasiuola demonstrated consistency and skill, achieving 12 pars alongside her five birdies and just a single bogey. Her final round score of 67 mirrored her opening round, propelling her to an impressive 6-under total for the tournament. This highlighted her as one of only three golfers to finish beneath par.

Ranking Against Top Competitors

Vakasiuola’s performance echoed beyond expectations, outdoing several nationally ranked players according to the Clippd Scoreboard Rankings. She finished just behind Catherine Park from USC, who is currently ranked No. 38 in the nation.

GCU Team Standing

The Grand Canyon University (GCU) Lopes concluded the tournament in 11th place out of 16 teams, amassing a total of 48-over-par. Dominating the competition was No. 2 USC, which finished at 17-under-par. Following them was No. 33 Eastern Michigan at 9-over, and No. 11 UCLA at 18-over.

In the final round, the Lopes shot an 11-over score, tying for the fifth-best performance among the participating schools.

Additional Contributors to GCU’s Efforts

Sophomore Allie Justiz also made a significant impact, recording a total of eight birdies throughout the tournament. She finished in a tie for 45th with a score of 13-over-par after a 4-over round on Monday. Other notable contributions came from junior Jess Haines (18-over/T-65th), junior Lena Tremouille (23-over/T-80th), and freshman Rosie Maguire (37-over/94th).

Both freshman Honor Johnson and sophomore Matilda Samervong competed as individuals, finishing in a tie for 80th at 23-over-par.

Team Statistics and Future Events

Overall, the Lopes recorded a total of 30 birdies, ranking them sixth in the field for this statistic. Vakasiuola’s outstanding performance placed her in the top five for scoring averages on par 3, par 4, and par 5 holes, and she registered the second-most birdies of the tournament with a total of 12.

Looking ahead, GCU will have a week off before participating in their home tournament, which kicks off on Tuesday, February 24 at the GCU Golf Course. The two-day GCU Invitational is open to the public, with rounds one and two taking place on Tuesday and the final round concluding on Wednesday, February 25.
