Remembering Gary Burton: A Legacy of Dedication in Athletics and Education

Gary Burton, a pivotal figure in the landscape of high school athletics, passed away at 88 on Tuesday morning at his home in Richfield. His remarkable journey began in 1961 when he joined Corning High School as a physical education teacher. Over a vibrant 30-year career, Burton transformed the school’s sports programs, leaving an indelible mark on countless athletes and aspiring coaches.

Lifelong Impact on Student-Athletes

Burton was encouraged to take the teaching position at Corning High by principal E.L. “Bud” Gott, who had previously been his own mentor at Vacaville High. Under Burton’s stewardship, the track and field team became a force in the Westside League, while the football program experienced historic success. In the 1980s, his teams won seven consecutive Northern Section championships—a record only later surpassed by De La Salle High School of Concord.

Bob Hall, a former assistant football coach under Burton, emphasized his profound influence: “He was a huge influence on a great number of people.” Beyond his coaching, Burton served in various roles, including a driver’s training instructor and crop adjustor, solidifying his status as a “pillar of the community.”

Academic and Athletic Excellence

Burton’s academic journey took him from East Contra Costa College—now Diablo Valley College—to Chico State, where he earned Hall of Fame accolades in both football and track and field. This rigorous educational background contributed significantly to his successful coaching philosophy. Burton believed in maintaining high standards for honesty and transparency with his players.

Unprecedented Success in Football

Burton’s leadership truly shone in football. After taking over the coaching role in 1977, he compiled an impressive record of 126 wins, 43 losses, and 2 ties, accumulating ten league championships. Notably, his football teams dominated the “Tehama County Shootout” rivalry against Red Bluff, securing a 9-0 record against them during his tenure.

Coaching Philosophy and Player Development

Burton’s coaching style was characterized by discipline and hard work. Players recalled rigorous practices that were often tougher than the games, fostering a sense of pride in representing their school and community. His former player, J Howell, remembered the deep-seated values instilled in the team’s culture, emphasizing teamwork and community service.

One remarkable student-athlete, Jeff Stover, attributed much of his success to Burton’s guidance. Stover excelled in track and field before achieving fame as a professional football player for the San Francisco 49ers, earning two Super Bowl rings.

Lasting Legacy Beyond Athletics

Gary Burton’s influence extended beyond the football field and track. He played an integral role in teaching driving skills in Corning, becoming a recognised figure in the community. Furthermore, his expertise in crop insurance made him a trusted advisor in the agricultural sector.

Burton also shared his passion for farming, growing walnuts and prunes, embodying the strong work ethic he instilled in his students.

Family and Community Connections

Family was paramount in Burton’s life. His daughter, Britt Freeman, recalled his caring nature and dedication to his family. He recently resumed active involvement in teaching, coaching his granddaughter Jane through her driver’s training—a heartfelt reflection of his lifelong commitment to nurturing young people.

Burton is survived by his son Brad, daughters Britt and Darci, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry forward his legacy in their endeavors.

Gary Burton’s commitment to excellence in education and athletics has shaped the lives of many and continues to resonate within the Corning community. His enduring legacy serves as a reminder of the power of mentorship and dedication in shaping futures.
