U.S. and Israel Launch Major Strikes on Iran: Political Reactions and Updates

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A significant military assault was launched over the weekend by the United States and Israel against Iran, resulting in strikes across at least 24 provinces. The operation reportedly led to the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles and drones aimed at both Israel and U.S. military bases in the area.

Death Toll and Local Impact

As of Saturday, initial reports indicated over 80 casualties and numerous injuries stemming from the airstrikes, particularly at a girls’ school in southern Iran, according to local governors speaking on Iranian state television. However, NBC has since reported that local media sources indicate the death toll may have exceeded 200, with hundreds more injuries reported. The U.S. military confirmed there were no American casualties following the strikes.

In California, numerous protests have occurred recently, advocating for U.S. support toward regime change in Iran as Iranian citizens themselves continue to protest against their own government.

Political Reactions

Following the news of the strikes, California politicians have voiced a range of opinions, from support of the military action to concerns regarding its legality and implications:

Governor Gavin Newsom

“The corrupt and repressive Iranian regime must never have nuclear weapons, and its leadership must go. However, the President’s decision to engage in this dangerous and illegal war puts American service members at risk without sufficient justification. California stands with the Iranian-American community, who have relatives fighting for their own rights.”

Senator Adam Schiff

“Trump has led us into yet another foreign conflict, against the will of the American public and without Congressional authorization. While the Iranian regime’s brutality is undeniable, it does not grant the President the authority to initiate war unilaterally. Congress must convene to vote on the War Powers Resolution.”

Senator Alex Padilla

“This attack without Congressional approval contradicts the President’s prior promises to prioritize American interests and avoid foreign conflicts. At a time when many families are grappling with economic challenges, launching an unnecessary war could have severe consequences.”

Representative Ami Bera

“As a senior member on key committees, I was not briefed on these strikes prior to their execution. The Administration must provide clarity regarding its legal justification and future objectives. We stand with the Iranian people in their quest for freedom, but any U.S. intervention must be carefully planned and justified.”

Representative Doris Matsui

“The President’s actions represent an illegal attack that risks American lives and ambiguity regarding a broader conflict. Lasting change should originate from within Iran, not through military intervention, which could further disrupt the region.”

Representative Mike Thompson

“This unauthorized war jeopardizes U.S. troops and destabilizes the area. The rationale presented by the President needs to be examined critically; we cannot go into another Middle Eastern conflict based on misleading premises.”

Representative John Garamendi

“The ongoing military action against Iran, without Congressional approval, raises serious constitutional concerns. While recognizing the regime’s violations, we must consider the broader implications of such strikes on American security and regional stability.”

Representative Tom McClintock

“Let us hope this marks the beginning of a transformative period for the Iranian people, aided by American leadership and our allies.”

Looking Ahead

In light of these developments, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to reconvene to vote on a War Powers Resolution concerning Iran, articulating Congress’s constitutional role in military engagements.
