Saint Mary’s Baseball Team Dominates San Jose State in Series Finale

San Jose, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s baseball team showcased a remarkable offensive performance on Sunday, rebounding from a shutout loss the previous day to triumph over San Jose State with a decisive score of 13-4. This victory capped off an impressive week for the Gaels, finishing their five-game stretch with a 4-1 record.

Offensive Firepower Energizes the Gaels

The Gaels delivered an outstanding offensive display, amassing 17 hits—a season high for the team—as they scored 13 runs against the Spartans. Notably, five players contributed multiple hits, highlighting the team’s offensive depth. The game was highlighted by a significant seven-run sixth inning, which included a three-run homer from Jacob Johnson, marking his seventh of the season and tying him for the national lead in home runs.

Key Performers Shine

Senior transfer Jake Hilton emerged as a key player, securing his second win of the season by pitching five solid innings while striking out seven batters. Meanwhile, sophomore right-hander Sam Kretsch showcased his closing abilities by shutting down the Spartans for three scoreless innings to earn his second save of the week.

Game Recap

Saint Mary’s started strong, scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Makoa Sniffen and Ian Armstrong. While San Jose State managed to tie the game in the fifth inning, the Gaels responded emphatically in the sixth with their impressive offensive surge.

Sixth Inning Explosion

The key moment came during the sixth inning when Jared Mettam, Tanner Griffith, and Brady Petit all contributed RBI singles before Johnson’s pivotal home run, which expanded the lead to 9-2.

Closing Strong

Armstrong also homered in the ninth inning, further solidifying the Gaels’ commanding victory. Contributions throughout the lineup were evident, with Griffith and Petit combining for six hits, four runs, and two RBIs, creating a formidable top of the order.

Game Highlights

  • Hit Milestones: Saint Mary’s matched its season-high 17 hits and has recorded double-digit hits in 9 of its 11 games this season.
  • Stolen Bases: The Gaels stole a season-high seven bases, showcasing their aggressive base-running strategy.
  • Pitching Performance: The pitching staff struck out a total of 14 batters, reflecting a strong performance on the mound.

Looking Ahead

The Saint Mary’s Gaels will look to continue their momentum as they prepare to host UC Davis for a midweek matchup on Tuesday. Following that, they will head to Southern California to face San Diego State in a competitive three-game series beginning on Friday.
