Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Carlsbad State Beach Nominated in California Parks Poll

Introduction
The stunning Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Carlsbad State Beach have been selected as nominees in the second annual California State Parks Foundation “Best of California’s State Parks” poll. This exciting event encourages outdoor enthusiasts across California to share their favorite parks, and voting is currently open.

Highlights of the Poll

The annual poll showcases California’s top destinations for a variety of activities, including:

  • Hiking
  • Camping
  • Scenic Views
  • Wildflower Blooms
  • Kid-Friendly Adventures

Rachel Norton, the executive director of the California State Parks Foundation, emphasized the importance of this poll, calling it a wonderful way for residents to express their love for diverse parks throughout the state. “Whether you seek a beach day, a hike through redwood trees, or a historical exploration, we invite you to participate and vote for your favorite state park,” she stated.

Anza-Borrego and Carlsbad: The Local Nominees

This year, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park has garnered nominations in three categories: best for camping, hiking, and viewing wildflowers. Meanwhile, Carlsbad State Beach competes for the title of best beach.

According to the foundation, during spring, Anza-Borrego can transform after sufficient rainfall, offering visitors spectacular wildflower views ranging from desert lilies to blooming ocotillo.

Previous Recognitions in 2025

San Diego County has previously showcased outstanding parks, with Anza-Borrego being recognized as the best for wildflower viewing. Additionally, Torrey Pines State Beach took home the title for the best picnic spot, offering stunning ocean views and serene coastal experiences.

The statement from the California State Parks Foundation noted that “With sweeping ocean views, golden cliffs, and the sound of waves just steps away, Torrey Pines State Beach provides an unforgettable backdrop for a seaside picnic.”

Honorable Mentions from 2025

Several other local parks also received honorable mentions, including:

  • Anza-Borrego for camping
  • Palomar Mountain State Park for picnicking and dog-friendly adventures
  • Cardiff State Beach for best beach

In the inaugural poll of 2025, over 1,300 individuals participated, sharing their photos, personal stories, and memories about why their chosen parks are beloved destinations.

Explore California’s Rich Park System

California boasts an impressive state park system featuring 280 park units, over 340 miles of coastline, 970 miles of lake and riverfront, 15,000 campsites, and 5,200 miles of trails. The diversity of these parks includes 3,195 historic buildings and over 11,000 archaeological sites that highlight the rich history and culture of the state.

Voting for this year’s poll is open until April 11 at California Parks. Results will be announced on May 5, 2023.
