Cal Bears Face Tough Loss Against No. 15 North Carolina

BERKELEY— The California Golden Bears baseball team faced a challenging defeat on Saturday, falling to the No. 15 North Carolina Tar Heels by a score of 6-2 at Stu Gordon Stadium. This loss marked the Bears’ first series defeat of the season, pushing their record to 13-6 (0-2 in conference play), while the Tar Heels improved to 16-3-1 overall, boasting a 3-2 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

North Carolina Takes Early Lead

From the first inning, North Carolina demonstrated their offensive prowess, scoring a run via an infield single and a well-placed single that brought in their initial run. The Tar Heels expanded their lead in the third inning, capitalizing on three hits to add two more runs, making the score 3-0.

Cal’s Attempted Comeback

Despite securing baserunners in the first two innings and putting runners in scoring positions in four of the first five innings, the Golden Bears struggled to find their rhythm at the plate. This pattern changed in the bottom of the sixth when freshman shortstop Jett Kenady blasted a two-out, two-run home run to left field, closing the gap to a single run.

However, North Carolina responded swiftly, staging a two-out rally in the seventh inning that resulted in two additional runs, bringing their lead to 5-2. The Bears managed to bring the tying run to the plate later in the seventh inning but were thwarted by a double play that ended the threat.

Pitching Performance

On the mound, Ethan Foley delivered a commendable performance, recording his second quality start of the season. He pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five Tar Heel batters, but was ultimately charged with the loss. Meanwhile, Jordy Lopez entered in relief, successfully maintaining a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout and a walk.

Throughout the game, six different Bears managed to secure hits, including designated hitter Hideki Prather, who notably led off with a double in the first inning.

Looking Ahead

The Golden Bears are now gearing up for the final game of their series, looking to avoid being swept for the first time this season. Fans can catch all the action with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM on ACCNX.
