UConn Baseball Triumphs Over California with 9-3 Victory
BERKELEY, Calif. — The University of Connecticut (UConn) baseball team improved their season record to 9-11 after a decisive 9-3 win against the University of California, Berkeley, who now hold a record of 13-8. The game took place on a warm Tuesday evening at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Resilience After Early Setback
UConn faced adversity right from the start as California’s Hideki Prather hit a leadoff home run, putting the Huskies down 1-0. However, UConn quickly bounced back in the second inning with a three-run surge. Key contributions came from Cam Righi and Nater, who both earned singles to start the rally. A crucial catcher’s interference by Evan Menzel loaded the bases. It was Bryce Detwiler who leveled the score with an RBI ground out.
Chase Taylor Shines in Northern California
Hailing from Concord, California, junior Chase Taylor delivered a standout performance with a two-out, two-run single that not only gave UConn their first lead but also highlighted his return to Northern California. Taylor finished the night with three hits, showcasing his offensive prowess.
Building a Comfortable Lead
In the fourth inning, shortstop Rob Rispoli extended the lead with a two-out RBI double, marking his third multi-hit game of the season. The momentum continued as Cam Righi pushed the lead further to 5-1 in the fifth inning with another RBI double. Righi had a standout game with three hits and reached base four times, proving to be an essential player for the Huskies.
Late-Inning Power
Despite some defensive missteps in the fifth inning that allowed California to narrow the score to 5-3, UConn answered back in the sixth inning. Back-to-back home runs from Tyler Minick and Jackson Marshall elevated the UConn lead to 8-3, solidifying their control of the game.
Strong Pitching Seals the Win
On the mound, Charlie Hale earned the victory with an impressive performance, throwing 5.1 innings and equaling a career-high with seven strikeouts. Relief pitcher Austin Trumpour stepped in to secure his first career save, delivering 3.2 shutout innings and maintaining UConn’s lead.
Upcoming Challenges
Looking ahead, the UConn baseball team will face Santa Clara (9-9) on Wednesday, March 18, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, aiming to build on this recent success.
