MILLBRAE, Calif. – In an impressive display of skill and resilience, Kansas State sophomore women’s golfer Nanami Nakashima wrapped up the first day of the Silicon Valley Showcase with a 36-hole score of 2-under par 140. This strong performance places Nakashima among the top competitors at the par-71, 6,084-yard Green Hills Country Club.

Ranked 34th in the latest National Collegiate Golf Rankings, the Wildcats currently sit in third place with a cumulative score of 12-over par 580. They trail 29th-ranked Eastern Michigan by eight strokes and are 12 shots behind No. 50 California, the current team leader. The Wildcats began the day with a first-round score of 11-over par 295 but demonstrated tenacity by recovering with a more robust performance in the afternoon, finishing at 1-over par 285.

Head coach Stew Burke commended his team’s recovery, stating, “We really battled back well after a slow start today and got right back in the tournament.” He emphasized the importance of the course’s challenging greens, acknowledging their potential to penalize even well-executed shots. “To close out this afternoon the way we did gives us a little momentum going into tomorrow,” he said, as the team aims for its fourth top-three finish of the season.

Nanami Nakashima’s Strong Showing

Nakashima is currently tied for second place, four strokes behind the individual leader, Baiyok Sukterm from Eastern Michigan. The Kani, Japan native delivered an impressive 2-under par 69 in her morning round, marked by three birdies and consistent play on the back nine. In the afternoon, she balanced her game again with an even-par round of 71, positioning herself well for a potential top-five finish this season.

Kelsey Chen, a senior from Dalian, China, and freshman Casey Kang are performing strongly, both tied for 17th place at 4-over par 146. In the morning, each golfer recorded a score of 4-over par 75 but bounced back brilliantly to submit even-par scores in the following round. Chen’s strong finish included birdie-birdie-par on her last three holes, while Kang mirrored her success by birdieing the par 5 2nd hole.

Keen Visavapattamawan, a freshman hailing from Bangkok, Thailand, stands just two shots behind her teammates, tied for 25th place at 6-over par 148. She wrapped up her day with rounds of 5-over par 76 and 1-over par.

Senior Noa van Beek currently finds herself tied for 49th place at 14-over par 156.
