Montana State Track & Field Dominates Opening Day in California
STANFORD, Calif. — The Montana State University (MSU) Track & Field team showcased exceptional talent on Friday as they participated in both the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. With a competitive spirit and outstanding performances, the Bobcats secured one victory and achieved five new entries on the program’s top-10 list.

Stellar Performances at Stanford
The day kicked off with Claire Rutherford, making a significant impact by setting the tone for the team in the 5k at San Francisco State, where she recorded a personal best. The excitement didn’t stop there; Bobcats excelled in various events, including:

Sydney Brewster, with her victory in the shot put invite at Stanford, recorded a remarkable mark of 17.00 meters (55 feet, 9.25 inches), dominating her field by 2.50 meters. This win was the first for Montana State over the weekend and energized the team.

In the women’s pole vault, both Tatum Richards and Libby Hansen displayed their skills, finishing second and third, respectively, with strong marks that reflected their dedication and training.
Advancements in Track Events
Several Bobcats also advanced from the prelims:
- Tilde Bjerager and Millie Hubbell excelled in the 100-meter hurdles, securing spots in the final with times of 13.61 and 13.95 seconds.
- Madi Siana finished the night impressively in the 10,000m, clocking a time of 33:49.85, placing 11th in her section and moving to fourth in the program’s history.
Achievements in the Mike Fanelli Track Classic
At the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, the Bobcats continued to shine:
- Claire Rutherford took the runner-up spot in the 5,000m with a time of 16:23.03, climbing to fourth in the program’s history for the distance.
- Hannah Perrin improved her time in the 3,000m steeplechase, achieving an impressive 10:23.16.
Notable Field Event Highlights
In addition to track events, the field events also produced notable performances:
- Maggie Hillis achieved second place in the shot put collegiate with a mark of 13.87m (45 feet, 6.25 inches).
- Matt Furdyk secured sixth place in the men’s discus invite, throwing 49.78m (163 feet, 4 inches).

The Bobcats are set to continue their competition at the Stanford Invitational, beginning at 10:45 a.m. MT on Saturday. Key events include Maggie Hillis and Sydney Mattfeldt participating in the women’s collegiate hammer throw, while running events will kick off at 2:10 p.m. with the women’s 4x100m relay.
Track Classic Schedule
At the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, the first event of the day starts at 1:20 p.m. with Sophia Miller, Iris Rogel, and Kaitlyn Skinner competing in the 800m.
