Sacramento Forum Highlights Key Congressional Race in California’s 7th District

Sacramento residents turned out in droves Thursday night, filling a neighborhood forum to engage with six candidates vying for the position in California’s 7th Congressional District, ahead of the upcoming June primary election. Organized by 10 local neighborhood associations and moderated by the League of Women Voters, the event drew over 300 attendees and numerous viewers via online streams.

Candidates Present at the Forum

Matsui defended her record by emphasizing her role in securing federal resources and advancing policies during a polarized political environment. She stated, “I don’t like the big money in politics. I’ve always focused on delivering for this community, and that’s what I intend to keep doing.”

Vang spotlighted healthcare as a critical issue, stating, “I support Medicare for all. She does not because she takes money from Big Pharma and health insurance companies.” Matsui, while open to discussions around Medicare for all, stressed the need for various pathways to expand health care access, stating, “We really need to understand that we have to have national health care for everyone.”

Other Candidates Address Forum

The remaining candidates used the platform to outline their unique priorities. Republican candidate Wooden underscored the need for generational change in leadership, saying, “I’m not running to represent just one group. I’m running to represent every generation.”

Democrats Morin and Nazhat focused on issues like affordability and government accountability, while Republicans Nwobi and Wooden presented varied stances on federal spending and government roles.

Audience Insights

Local resident Alan Lofaso attended the forum to closely observe the candidates. “I do think there was a very clear contrast between Doris Matsui and Mai Vang,” he remarked, noting that he is still undecided. Lofaso views the race as largely a contest between Matsui and Vang, reflecting the Democratic nature of the district.

“There are signs that Vang appears to be gaining traction in the race,” he added, illustrating a growing interest in her campaign among voters.
