Wake Forest Men’s Tennis Team Navigates Ups and Downs on West Coast
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons men’s tennis team (26-3, 11-1 ACC) recently embarked on a critical West Coast trip, aiming to maintain their strong standing in the ACC Title race. While Friday’s match brought unexpected challenges, the team demonstrated their resilience, bouncing back to regain momentum on Sunday.
Heartbreak at Stanford
The Deacs began their road journey in Palo Alto against a formidable top-25 Stanford squad, which inaugurated its new tennis facility amidst an electrifying home crowd. The competition was fierce from the start, yet Wake Forest’s doubles lineup rose to the occasion. The esteemed fourth-ranked duo of DK Suresh Ekambaram and Andrew Delgado claimed a significant victory, winning 7-5 on court one.
However, an unfortunate result on court three raised stakes, but Mees Rottgering and Kacper Szymkowiak managed to secure the doubles point with a tiebreaker win.
Once singles play commenced, matches remained closely contested, with Wake Forest securing critical first-set victories. Junior Luca Pow showcased his skills, wrapping up his match with a dominant 6-0 second-set win, initially putting the Deacs on the board.
As the match continued, Senior DK Suresh pulled the team to a promising 3-0 lead, inching the Deacs closer to victory. Unfortunately, Stanford rallied back decisively, winning three consecutive matches in third sets, culminating in a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat for Wake Forest. This marked the Deacs’ first conference loss in two years.
Bounce-Back at Cal
In sports, how a team responds to defeat can be just as telling as the loss itself. The Deacs quickly shifted their focus and managed to rebound impressively against California. Taking charge early, Wake Forest regained control of the doubles point, achieving 6-3 victories with the pairs of Andrew Delgado and DK Suresh, alongside Luca Pow and Aryan Shah.
In singles play, Joaquin Guilleme and Dominick Mosejczuk both started strong, winning their opening sets. Guilleme finished with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory, while Mosejczuk followed suit with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-1. Although Wake dropped matches on courts one and four, Mees Rottgering clinched the victory for the Deacs on court two with a score of 7-6 (1), 6-3. This notable triumph allowed the team to end their West Coast trip on a high note.
ACC Standings Check
Following a split weekend in California, Wake Forest now shares the top position in the ACC standings with Virginia, both teams sitting at 11-1. However, the Deacs currently hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Cavaliers due to their earlier victory in Winston-Salem.
Looking ahead, a win this weekend against NC State would secure at least a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference title for the second consecutive year, with NC State, Notre Dame, and Stanford trailing at 8-4.
What’s Next?
The Demon Deacons prepare for their final regular season match, hosting NC State in a pivotal Big Four rivalry showdown this Saturday, April 11th, at 5 PM in Winston-Salem. This match will also celebrate Senior Day, honoring DK Suresh. Fans are encouraged to attend and support the Deacs as they aim to clinch the ACC Championship title.
