Chris Cobb Joins Saint Mary’s College as Associate Head Coach

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary’s College of California has announced the appointment of Chris Cobb as the new associate head coach for the men’s basketball team. With extensive experience and a remarkable coaching record, Cobb brings a wealth of knowledge to the Gaels.

A Proven Track Record at Montana

Chris Cobb joins Saint Mary’s after 12 impactful years at the University of Montana, where he served as the associate head coach for the last decade. His leadership played a crucial role in the Grizzlies’ success, leading to an impressive average of 20.5 wins per season. Under Cobb’s guidance, Montana clinched four Big Sky Conference regular-season titles and triumphed in the Big Sky tournament championships in 2018 and 2019, as well as in 2025, ultimately earning spots in the NCAA Tournament.

In his own words, Cobb expressed, “I’m incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the men’s basketball program at Saint Mary’s. This is a place with a rich tradition and strong culture.” His return to the Bay Area adds a personal touch, as he considers this move a homecoming for him and his family.

Records and Achievements

During his time at Montana, Cobb became the program’s winningest assistant coach, amassing 226 total wins. Notably, the Grizzlies held an impressive conference record of 140-61 in Big Sky play (.697 winning percentage) since the 2014-15 season, achieving a balanced record against all nine conference opponents.

Experience Beyond Montana

Before his tenure at Montana, Cobb was instrumental at Chico State from 2010 to 2014. As an assistant coach, he helped lead the Wildcats to three consecutive NCAA DII tournament appearances, culminating in a journey to the Elite Eight in the 2013-14 season. His time at Chico State also saw the team secure its first championship in the California Collegiate Athletic Association during the 2011-12 season.

Earlier in his career, Cobb served as an assistant at San Francisco State during the 2009-10 season, helping the Gators finish with a winning record of 17-14.

Collegiate and High School Background

A standout player at Menlo College in Atherton, Calif., Cobb garnered two-time All-California Pacific Conference first-team honors and was part of the Oaks’ conference championship team in 2008. He left Menlo ranked second in both career assists and three-pointers made.

Cobb’s journey began at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, where he contributed significantly to the team’s success, leading them to three consecutive Hayward Area Athletic League titles and a state championship game appearance in 2004. His accolades included first-team all-league selections during his junior and senior years.

Educational Credentials

Cobb holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Menlo College (2009) and earned his master’s degree in kinesiology, specializing in sports administration, from Fresno Pacific University in 2012.

A Family-Oriented Coach

Cobb and his wife, Alisa, are proud parents to two children: a son, Clayton, born in September 2019, and a daughter, Olivia, born in November 2021. His focus on family values reflects his commitment to building not only a successful program but also a nurturing environment for student-athletes.

Saint Mary’s College is poised for a bright future with Chris Cobb as a critical part of the coaching staff. The community eagerly anticipates the positive impact he will have on Gaels basketball.
