Spring Storm System to Bring Heavy Rain and Snow to Northern California

A significant spring storm system is set to impact Northern California, delivering rounds of rain and thunderstorms. The heaviest activity is expected from Friday through the weekend, particularly in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where a substantial snow accumulation is projected.

Thunderstorms and Hail in the Sacramento Region

In the Sacramento area, storm activity will kick off Friday morning. However, the peak of thunderstorm activity is anticipated from the afternoon into the evening. Residents can expect reports of ping-pong ball-sized hail and lightning, with occurrences already noted in Sacramento, Modesto, Elk Grove, and Solano County.

Potential for Severe Thunderstorms

If a brief period of sunshine emerges early to mid-afternoon, conditions could become ripe for stronger or even severe thunderstorms. On the other hand, persistent cloud cover may yield widespread rain coupled with embedded thunderstorms, though isolated stronger cells could still develop.

Storm Hazards Across the Valley

Storm hazards in the valley area include:

  • Gusty winds
  • Brief heavy downpours
  • Lightning
  • Small hail

These conditions can also lead to slick roads and potential ponding on area roadways.

Weekend Storm Developments

The unsettled weather pattern will persist into the weekend, with a more organized system expected to hit Northern California. According to the CBS News Sacramento First Alert Weather team, multiple squall lines will be moving onshore, with Saturday evening anticipated as the main event. This system could bring:

  • Periods of heavy rain
  • Poor drainage
  • Flooding
  • Embedded strong thunderstorms across the Sacramento Valley and surrounding areas.

Rain and Wind Forecast for the Bay Area

The same storm system is projected to move into the San Francisco Bay Area, where approximately three-quarters of an inch of rain could fall through Saturday evening. Thunderstorms are likely during this period, with an increased chance early Sunday morning as the system’s center moves east.

Significant Winter Weather in the Sierra Nevada

As the storm progresses into the Sierra Nevada, conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly. Snow levels are forecast to drop significantly, creating hazardous winter weather impacts. Near Donner Pass, around 2 feet of snow is likely, with the potential for up to 4 feet at higher elevations. Even lower elevations could see 2 to 6 inches of snow down to about 4,000 feet.

Ongoing Rain and Mountain Snow

Waves of heavy rain and mountain snow are anticipated to continue through Sunday. Gradual improvement in conditions is expected as the storm system moves out of the region.

Prepare for Unsafe Conditions

Residents should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions and be prepared for possible hazardous travel situations. For more updates and safety tips, keep an eye on local weather resources and stay informed.
