UC Santa Barbara Joins the West Coast Conference: A New Horizon for Athletics
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) is set to join the prestigious West Coast Conference (WCC) starting July 1, 2027. This move marks a significant milestone for the university, which is recognized as one of the nation’s leading public research institutions.
A Commitment to Excellence
Chancellor Dennis Assanis highlighted the importance of this transition: “UC Santa Barbara is recognized as one of the nation’s leading public research universities, delivering an academically rigorous and socially rewarding experience.” He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities for enhanced exposure and visibility for both UCSB’s athletics and academic programs within the WCC framework.

The institution will also maintain affiliations with other conferences for its non-WCC sports programs. This will not be UCSB’s first stint in the WCC; the university was a member from 1965 to 1969.
Transformative Opportunity for Student-Athletes
Kelly Barsky, The Arnhold Director of Athletics, stated, “This is a transformative moment for UC Santa Barbara Athletics, one that will bring together and excite our campus and community.” Barsky expressed gratitude for the invitation from the WCC, emphasizing the importance of timing in aligning with the conference’s expanded regional profile and commitment to both academic and athletic excellence.
Enhancing the WCC Community
Christopher Callahan, President of the University of the Pacific and Chair of the WCC Presidents’ Council, expressed his delight in welcoming UCSB into the conference. He noted that UCSB will add significant athletic prowess and academic prestige, adhering to the geographic profile of the WCC.
WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson remarked, “This is a monumental moment for the West Coast Conference as we grow our membership to 12 institutions for the first time in our history.” He emphasized that the inclusion of UCSB aligns with the conference’s mission of competitive excellence and national exposure.
The Future of the West Coast Conference
