David McLay Kidd to Design Coral Mountain Desert Club Golf Course in La Quinta

La Quinta, California – Renowned golf course designer David McLay Kidd, famed for his work on iconic courses across the globe, is set to create a new golfing haven in La Quinta’s sandy soil. The Coral Mountain Desert Club is designed to be a unique residential and recreational community spanning 400 acres and is expected to open by early 2028.

A New Approach to Desert Golf

Kidd, known for masterpieces like Bandon Dunes in Oregon and the Castle Course at St. Andrews, is enthusiastic about working with the sandy terrain of La Quinta. “Sandy material to a Scotsman, that’s the elixir of life,” Kidd stated, eager to begin construction in July. The Coral Mountain course will be the first significant addition to the Coachella Valley’s golf scene since 2023, marking just the second new course developed since 2008.

Community-Focused Design

Graham Culp, a partner in the development company Meriweather Companies, emphasized the community-centric vision for Coral Mountain. “Our goal is to create a lifestyle-centered atmosphere where golf is one of many enjoyable activities,” said Culp. This approach aims to foster a relaxed environment that welcomes a variety of recreational pursuits beyond just golf.

Unique Landscape Features

Kidd is particularly excited about the picturesque setting of Coral Mountain, which will feature breathtaking backdrops. “Coral Mountain is right there, allowing us to integrate this stunning landscape into our design,” he noted. The course will focus on a link-style design, encouraging golfers to connect with the land through innovative gameplay.

A New Kind of Golf Experience

The Coral Mountain Desert Club aims to differ from the traditional private club model. “We’re creating a relaxed atmosphere, welcoming to guests and different from the conventional, stuffy golf experience,” Kidd explained. This dynamic is complemented by a variety of activities, catering to individuals passionate about more than just golf.

Economic Resurgence and Golf

The Coachella Valley experienced a remarkable surge in home-buying post-COVID, prompting a shift in land use for the Coral Mountain project. The developers aim to establish a community that aligns with current lifestyles and market demands. “People are looking for a place where they can live younger and longer, surrounded by like-minded individuals,” Culp stated.

A Memorable Golfing Challenge

Kidd acknowledges the challenges of designing in an area with a rich history of distinguished golf courses. “There’s significant pressure to meet the high standards already set by celebrated architects, but I’m excited to rise to the occasion,” he remarked. His vision for Coral Mountain includes an immersive golfing experience that emphasizes playing off the ground, promoting skillful shots and strategic gameplay.

Conclusion: Coral Mountain Desert Club’s Promising Future

With groundbreaking slated for July and an anticipated opening in late 2027 or early 2028, the Coral Mountain Desert Club is positioned to become a distinguished addition to the Coachella Valley golfing landscape. Its unique blend of lifestyle amenities and expertly designed golf course aims to attract both seasoned golfers and newcomers seeking a fresh, engaging experience.
