Boise State Women’s Golf Gears Up for 2026 Mountain West Championship

The Boise State Broncos women’s golf team is set to compete in the 2026 Mountain West Championship, scheduled for April 21-23. This prestigious event will take place at the renowned Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, where the Broncos will join nine other teams in pursuit of championship glory.

Competition Schedule and Format

On the first day of the tournament, Boise State golfers will tee off between 9:20 and 10 a.m. MT. As the competition progresses, the tee times for the second and third rounds will be determined based on the most recent standings in the tournament.

Participating Teams

The tournament will feature a competitive field, including:

  • Boise State
  • Colorado State
  • Fresno State
  • Grand Canyon
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • San Diego State
  • San Jose State
  • UNLV
  • Wyoming

Previous Performance Highlights

In their most recent outing, the Boise State Broncos finished seventh at the Cowgirl Classic, posting a team score of 874 (+10). Notable performances included Leia Chung, who tied for 13th with a score of 216 (E), and Callia Ward, who tied for 25th at 219 (+3). The team’s opening-round score of 288 (E) was their best thus far in the spring season, with both Chung and Brooke Patterson achieving the lowest individual 18-hole scores of the tournament.

Leia Chung’s Remarkable Comeback

After sitting out the 2024-25 season due to injury, Leia Chung made a stellar return at the Golfweek Fall Challenge, winning the tournament and setting new program and tournament records for a 54-hole score of 199 (-14). Her nine-stroke victory tied the largest margin in the program’s history.

Chung also clinched the individual title at the New Mexico Golf Iconic Classic, shooting 207 (-9) and leading the Broncos to a team victory with a combined score of 851 (-12), which is the second-best in school history.

Coaching Excellence

Head coach Kailin Downs is in her fifth season with the Broncos, steering the team to new heights. Under her leadership, the team’s scoring average has dropped to 292.67, the lowest in program history. In 2024, she guided the team to the second-lowest scoring average, along with the record for the lowest 36-hole and 54-hole scores.

Contract Extension

Kailin Downs recently signed a two-year contract extension, ensuring her continued leadership through the 2028 season.

All-Conference Recognition

Teal Matsueda earned All-Mountain West Second Team honors for the 2024-25 season, marking her as the first Bronco since 2018-19 to achieve all-conference recognition.

Record-Breaking Performances

Currently, several players are making their mark in the Boise State record books. Leia Chung holds multiple records, including second, fourth, and seventh-lowest individual 36-hole scores. Chung’s career average of 72.99 places her at the top of the program’s history, alongside Matsueda who holds the eighth-best average of 74.19.

Recent Milestones

Since Coach Kailin Downs took the helm in 2021, the Broncos have set multiple records at the Mountain West Championship. The last four tournaments have included the four lowest 54-hole scores in the program’s history, including a record-breaking 884 (+20) in 2023.

Upcoming Lineup for the Championship

As the Broncos prepare for the Mountain West Championship, the lineup comprises:

  1. Leia Chung
  2. Teal Matsueda
  3. Jillian Hui
  4. Callia Ward
  5. Brooke Patterson

Substitute: Macee Greenwood

The Boise State women’s golf team looks primed for success as they head into the championship. With a combination of hardworking athletes and a dedicated coaching staff, the Broncos are ready to make their mark in 2026.
