Northern California Weather Update: Incoming Storms and Rain

Forecast Overview: A series of storm systems are set to impact Northern California, starting this Sunday. While initial rain will be light, the weather will turn significantly wetter as the day progresses.

Sunday Forecast: Showers Kick Off the Weekend

Northern California residents can expect a mix of weather on Sunday. The day will begin with spotty showers that might even give way to some sunshine in the morning. As the day unfolds, expect rain to spread across the region, particularly by the afternoon and evening. High temperatures are projected to reach the mid-60s for the valleys, with foothill temperatures in the upper 50s and Sierra temperatures hovering around the mid-40s.

A southerly breeze will pick up, with winds sustained at 10 to 15 mph, adding a slight chill to the air.

Afternoon and Evening Rain

As the afternoon progresses, rain will begin to move in from the coastline, leading to widespread showers that are expected to continue into the early hours of Monday. Weather Alert Days have been declared for Monday and Tuesday as two winter storm systems make their way through the area.

Storm System Breakdown

Storm One: Rainier System

Arrival: Sunday through Monday
Characteristics: This storm system will be classified as the rainier of the two. It is expected to bring 1 to 2 inches of rain across the valleys, which could lead to slippery conditions.

Impact: The first storm is set to make its presence felt by Sunday evening, with rain lasting into Monday morning. While this storm generates rain for the valleys, the Sierra Nevada will receive between 2 to 5 feet of snow, especially at higher elevations.

Storm Two: Windier and Colder System

Arrival: Tuesday (mid-morning to afternoon)
Characteristics: The second storm will be colder and windier, featuring plummeting snow levels that start significantly high at 5,500 feet on Sunday but will drop to 2,500 feet by Wednesday morning.

Impact: Heavy snowfall is expected on Tuesday, particularly at lower elevations, where 8 to 10 inches of snow is possible at altitudes around 3,000 feet. This storm will bring stronger winds, with gusts potentially reaching up to 45 mph.

Additional Weather Developments

As the second storm system subsides on Tuesday afternoon, lingering moisture will allow for light showers and breezy conditions on Wednesday. This may cause travel difficulties, especially through the Sierra, where snow is likely to continue into Wednesday evening.

Looking Ahead

Conditions are expected to clear by Thursday, although some forecasts suggest more unsettled weather may return by the end of the week and into the weekend. Residents should remain alert to changing weather conditions and plan accordingly.

Conclusion

Summary: Northern California is bracing for an eventful weather pattern with two incoming storm systems. While Sunday might start off gentle, the rain will intensify leading into the workweek, followed by significant snowfall in the Sierra Nevada. Stay prepared and keep updated for any changes in forecasts.
