Heavy Rain Causes Major Flooding in Commerce and El Monte: Drivers Stranded

Introduction
On Monday, severe rainfall led to widespread flooding in Commerce and El Monte, leaving numerous drivers stranded as rushing water surged across roadways. Emergency services were called upon to rescue individuals trapped in vehicles, and local infrastructure was put to the test as crews worked diligently to clear the aftermath.

Impact of Flooding on Local Residents

Clogged Drains and Vehicle Emergencies

Caltrans crews responded quickly to the flooding crisis, focusing on clearing clogged drains along Garfield Avenue in Commerce. At least five vehicles became immobilized in the rising water, with debris marking the previous locations of pools of floodwaters.

Sandra Shpegel, a resident of Montebello, shared her harrowing experience. Typically cautious about driving in poor weather, she ventured out to fill her gas tank and found herself in a precarious situation when she attempted to pass through a flooded street.

“The tow truck driver thinks my car is going to be totaled because of the water damage,” Shpegel reported after being forced to escape through her car’s window, only to face further peril when a semi-truck sideswiped her vehicle.

Her urgent message to others emphasized the danger of attempting to navigate flooded streets, a sentiment echoed by her daughter who faced a similar ordeal.

Additional Challenges in El Monte

In El Monte, the conditions were no better. Drivers faced numerous flooded streets that complicated their commutes. Motorist Joey Rodriguez recounted his experience, describing the roads as hazardous:

“There’s like, puddles everywhere. So like, pulling up here, I was just splashing water everywhere,” he said, urging caution among his fellow drivers.

Sabrina Martinez, another commuter, reported significant traffic delays, underscoring the need for additional planning in light of the weather conditions.

“It’s crazy. It’s bumper-to-bumper traffic. You definitely have to plan to go to work a little earlier,” Martinez advised.

Continuing Cleanup Efforts

As rainfall subsided by Monday evening in Commerce, emergency measures remained in full effect. Traffic cones were still positioned along Garfield Avenue, preventing through-traffic in both directions while crews continued their efforts to maintain clear drainage systems.

Safety Precautions for Drivers

This week’s flooding serves as a stark reminder for all drivers in the region to prioritize safety. Authorities advise avoiding flooded areas entirely and to seek alternative routes whenever possible.

Conclusion
Monday’s heavy rain and resultant flooding have left an indelible mark on the communities of Commerce and El Monte. With continued vigilance and support from local authorities, residents can begin to recover from this disruptive weather event.
