Early Rattlesnake Season in Orange County: What You Need to Know

As temperatures rise, rattlesnake season in Orange County has commenced ahead of schedule. With recent warm weather, encounters with these reptiles are becoming more frequent, prompting awareness and safety measures for outdoor enthusiasts.

Rattlesnake Encounters on the Rise

Trail runner Greg Hardesty experienced a close call when he encountered a large red diamond rattlesnake on a local path. “Yeah, he stopped me in my tracks,” Hardesty shared. Fortunately, the snake slithered away, allowing him to continue his run without having to add extra miles to his route.

The following day, Mission Viejo Animal Services responded to multiple reports of rattlesnakes on private properties. One rattlesnake was discovered under a patio chair, while another was stretched across a warm sidewalk leading to Matt Davis Park. Local landscaper Mauricio Navarro noted the prevalence of rattlesnakes in the area, stating, “The gardeners often refer to this park as ‘Rattlesnake Park.’ We sometimes spot two or three a day.”

Understanding Rattlesnake Behavior

According to Animal Services Manager Kyle Werner, the warm weather has prompted rattlesnakes to emerge earlier than usual this year. “Yesterday, we received four calls about rattlesnakes,” Werner explained. “Although one instance turned out to be a lizard, three other calls were confirmed snake sightings. The unseasonably warm temperatures, reaching nearly 100 degrees in some areas, trigger the snakes to come out in search of warmth.”

How Animal Control Handles Rattlesnake Sightings

Animal control officers are equipped with tongs and buckets to safely retrieve rattlesnakes. “We open the lid and capture the rattlesnake using snake tongs, then securely transport it to a safer location,” Werner added.

Safety Tips for Avoiding Rattlesnake Encounters

To minimize the risk of encountering rattlesnakes while outdoors, consider the following safety tips:

  1. Stay on the Path: Always hike in the middle of trails to avoid snake habitats.
  2. Garden Caution: When gardening, use a rake to disturb bushes before reaching in, preventing unexpected encounters.
  3. Leash Your Pets: Keep pets on a leash and prevent them from exploring bushy areas where snakes might reside.

Conclusion

As Orange County enters an early rattlesnake season, it’s crucial for residents and visitors to stay vigilant and informed. By following safety tips and enhancing awareness about rattlesnake activity, everyone can enjoy the great outdoors while minimizing risks. Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!
