Southern California Weather Update: Gusty Santa Ana Winds Continue

After experiencing a particularly windy Saturday, Southern California is set for another breezy day on Sunday. The latest forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate that while the Santa Ana winds won’t be as intense as those felt on Saturday, gusts are still expected to reach between 35 to 45 mph in certain areas of Los Angeles County. The region is also bracing for high temperatures that could soar up to 92 degrees, warranting heat advisories.

L.A. Marathon Adjustments Due to Weather Conditions

In light of these weather conditions, organizers of the L.A. Marathon have introduced a contingency plan for runners participating in the event. If temperatures become excessively hot, runners have the option to finish at the 18-mile mark and still receive a finisher’s medal. While elite athletes have successfully crossed the finish line of the 26.2-mile race, thousands of competitors will continue navigating the streets of Los Angeles through the early afternoon hours.

Santa Ana Winds Impact on Local Areas

The moderate Santa Ana wind event initiated on Friday poses various challenges, particularly in mountainous regions and canyon passes. Officials have issued warnings to residents about potential hazards, advising them to be vigilant for downed trees and power lines. They also recommend avoiding windows during windstorms and exercising caution while traveling. Streets in Los Angeles were littered with plant debris due to the wind activity on Saturday.

Small Fires Break Out Amid Gusty Conditions

Several small fires sparked across the region on Saturday but were swiftly contained by local firefighters. One notable incident occurred in the Hollywood Hills, where a fire broke out at a three-story home located in the 8500 block of W. Oak Ct. Over 100 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the blaze, which was successfully managed in less than two hours with no reported injuries.

Looking Ahead: Cooler Weather and Dry Conditions

As the week progresses, Southern California will likely see cooler temperatures settling in early next week. However, residents should prepare for another warm and dry spell predicted for Wednesday.

For ongoing updates on weather conditions and safety recommendations in Southern California, check out resources like the National Weather Service. Stay informed, and prioritize safety as you navigate the gusty winds and warm temperatures.
