Unseasonable Warmth: California’s March Weather Outlook

As March draws to a close, California is experiencing exceptionally warm temperatures, prompting attention from meteorologists and residents alike. Here’s an in-depth look at what to expect from the weather across the state.

Ongoing High Temperatures Across California

The unprecedented heat wave that swept through California earlier in March has subsided, but temperatures remain significantly above average. In some areas, highs are reaching more than 20 degrees above typical March levels. Daily record temperatures may still be in the cards for regions such as the Central Valley, Central Coast, Sierra Nevada, and Southern California.

  • Northern California: Expect highs in the 60s around Lake Tahoe, while Sacramento and Fresno could see temperatures rise into the 80s. Los Angeles is predicted to reach near 90 degrees, and Palm Springs may even hit or exceed the 100-degree mark.

  • Historical Context: Although these temperatures represent a drop from last week’s extremes, they are still unusually warm for this time of year. It’s notable that recent March records have been shattered, raising concern about climate trends.

Regional Forecast Highlights

San Francisco and the Bay Area

In San Francisco, coastal residents can anticipate highs in the upper 60s to mid-70s throughout the week, thanks to the moderating effect of the sea breeze. While this is cooler than inland areas, it’s still well above late March norms.

  • North Bay: With partly to mostly sunny skies, highs will range from the mid-60s along the coastline to the low 80s in interior valleys.

Precipitation Forecast

Only Del Norte and Humboldt Counties are likely to receive any rain this week, with amounts not expected to exceed half an inch. The remainder of the state will mostly experience a combination of sun and clouds, transitioning to clearer skies midweek.

Drought Concerns

San Francisco faces the possibility of ending March with barely any rain, which would mark its driest March in over a century. The city has only recorded 0.06 inches of precipitation this month. This highlights ongoing drought concerns in a state where water conservation efforts are critically needed.

Temperature Predictions Through the Weekend

Warm temperatures are expected to persist into the weekend, with dry conditions forecasted through early April. Models suggest that the areas of high pressure contributing to the current heat may shift, potentially leading to more unsettled weather patterns.

Extended Forecast

While the next week may remain dry, the National Weather Service indicates that chances for rain might return around April 1, as pressure patterns change. Historical data shows April averages for San Francisco typically include six days of rainfall, contributing to an average monthly precipitation of about 1.4 inches.

Daily Breakdown: Monday’s Weather Insights

San Francisco

  • Temperature: Highs in the low 60s in Outer Sunset, mid-60s in the Marina and Presidio, and low 70s in downtown areas. Gusty sea breezes could reach up to 20 mph.

North Bay

  • Temperatures: Expect 60s near the coast and upper 70s to low 80s in Napa and Sonoma valleys.

East Bay

  • Weather: Continued sunny conditions with highs ranging from the upper 60s to the low 80s in warmer locales like Lamorinda and Brentwood.

Pacific Coast

  • Forecast: Mostly sunny with temperatures in the low to mid-60s on average, with increasing winds near the coast.

South Bay

  • Outlook: The warm spell continues with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, especially in areas like Santa Cruz and Cupertino.
