Transforming Beauty: The Eco-Friendly Revolution at Scisters Salon & Apothecary

When stepping into Scisters Salon & Apothecary in La Mesa, California, visitors instantly sense a refreshing atmosphere. Unlike conventional salons filled with the sharp aroma of chemicals and plastic packaging, this innovative space opts for a tranquil setting. No towering shelves of glossy plastic bottles adorned with promises of “repair” or “shine” can be found here. Instead, the salon boasts large refill containers of shampoo and conditioner, cozy houseplants, and a sustainable approach to waste management that sets it apart from traditional salons.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Co-founder Melissa Parker notes, “It’s the smell people comment on straight away.” Clients often remark on the pleasant aroma permeating the space—a stark contrast to the typical salon experience. Scisters has established itself as a low-waste salon, successfully diverting up to 99% of its waste from landfills.

The Dark Side of Beauty Industry Waste

The beauty industry is notorious for its environmental impact, with North American salons contributing an estimated 63,000 pounds of hair and hundreds of tons of chemical waste to landfills every day. Many salon products contain hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde, posing significant health risks to salon workers. Acknowledging these issues, Parker and co-founder Easton Bajsec made a commitment to operate not just a salon, but an eco-friendly sanctuary.

The Journey Toward Sustainability

From Traditional to Transformational

Parker and Bajsec, both natives of San Diego, originally opened a typical salon in 2010. Initially, Scisters offered a range of popular beauty products while being mindful of the planet, but the duo felt a growing urgency to do more. Their transformation began after Bajsec watched a documentary on the zero-waste movement and Parker faced health challenges linked to salon chemicals.

Redefining Beauty Products

Determined to minimize their environmental footprint, they refocused the products and services offered. They eliminated perms, which release formaldehyde, and phased out mainstream shampoo brands housed in plastic bottles. Instead, they dedicated years to developing a sustainable product line called Element, made from organic ingredients and sold in refillable glass containers.

Innovative Waste Management Strategies

Scisters rethought its waste management approach in multiple ways. Bajsec collaborated with local waste services to compost hair clippings, while they started recycling foil instead of dumping it. They replaced waxing services with sugaring—a compostable hair removal method. In efforts to reduce paper waste, customers use washable cloths in the restroom.

Eco-Friendly Design Choices

Sustainability extends into the salon’s decor, with antique furniture used instead of new materials. They’ve installed LED lighting and eco-friendly shower heads, further reducing their environmental impact.

Challenges and Achievements

While Scisters has made significant strides, it’s important to acknowledge the challenges. Offering hair bleaching—a procedure tied to ammonia usage—remains necessary to meet client demands. However, they mitigate potential risks through proper ventilation and air-purifying plants. Although complete waste elimination isn’t feasible due to regulations, Parker and Bajsec minimize plastic output by working with Green Circle Salons for responsible waste processing.

Financial Benefits of Going Green

Contrary to common misconceptions, implementing sustainable practices has been financially advantageous for Scisters. The initial investments into their eco-friendly line have resulted in long-term cost savings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when salons faced closures, Scisters pivoted to offering refill sales and quickly adapted to keep revenue flowing.

Impact on the Community and Industry

Society is becoming increasingly aware of sustainability, and beauty professionals, like those at Scisters, hold a unique position to influence change. Denise Baden, a professor of sustainable business, emphasizes that salons have the potential to educate their clients about greener beauty practices, thereby making a significant community impact.

Spreading the Sustainable Message

Scisters actively shares its knowledge and practices with fellow salon owners. They have participated in local sustainability events and strive to inspire other salons to adopt eco-friendly models. Bajsec points out, “It’s not sustainable if we’re the only ones doing it.”

Conclusion

Scisters Salon & Apothecary is redefining beauty by prioritizing sustainability and health. By offering eco-friendly services and products, they prove that making responsible choices can foster both business success and environmental stewardship. With a growing number of salons seeking to implement similar practices, Scisters serves as both a pioneer and a model for the future of beauty.

For a sustainable beauty experience that benefits both you and the planet, consider visiting Scisters and exploring their innovative offerings.
