Boston Scientific Acquires Valencia Technologies, Boosting Bladder Dysfunction Treatment Offerings

Marlborough, MA – In a strategic move to expand its medical device portfolio, Boston Scientific, a leading manufacturer based in Marlborough, has successfully completed its acquisition of Valencia Technologies, a company renowned for its advancements in bladder dysfunction treatments.

Enhancing Treatment Options with the eCoin System

The acquisition, initially announced in January, sees the integration of Valencia Technologies’ innovative eCoin system into Boston Scientific’s array of products. This cutting-edge system provides a solution for individuals suffering from overactive bladder through a small, coin-sized implantable device that stimulates nerves to enhance communication between the brain and bladder.

Effectiveness of the eCoin Technology

Demonstrating significant clinical success, the eCoin system received FDA approval in 2022. According to the manufacturer, approximately 68% of users reported over a 50% reduction in urinary incontinence symptoms after using the device. This breakthrough offers hope to the nearly 30 million adults aged 40 and older in the U.S. who are affected by this condition, as stated by Boston Scientific.

Boston Scientific’s Continued Growth Path

The financial details of the Valencia Technologies acquisition were not disclosed, as confirmed by spokesperson Nate Gilbraith. This acquisition aligns with Boston Scientific’s strategy of growth through strategic acquisitions. Earlier this year, the company announced a staggering $14.5 billion deal for Penumbra, a California-based healthcare firm. Additionally, in October, it revealed plans to purchase Nalu Medical, a medical technology company, for $533 million.

Manufacturing Excellence in Massachusetts

Founded in 1979, Boston Scientific has become a cornerstone of the medical device industry, manufacturing treatments for a broad spectrum of health conditions, including urological, cardiovascular, digestive, and neurological diseases. The company employs around 2,800 individuals in Central Massachusetts, making it the second-largest manufacturer in the region, as reported by WBJ Research Department data.

In conclusion, Boston Scientific’s acquisition of Valencia Technologies not only solidifies its commitment to expanding its treatment innovations for bladder dysfunction but also underscores its position as a driving force within the medical device landscape. This ongoing growth reflects the company’s dedication to improving patient outcomes and addressing the critical health needs of millions.
