Iowa State Track and Field Team Splits for Major Competitions in California

The Iowa State track and field team is gearing up for an exciting week, competing in two prestigious events: the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University and the Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College. Both events are conveniently located just eight miles apart in California, providing a unique opportunity for the Cyclones to showcase their talent across multiple competitions.

Events Overview

The Cyclones will have a strong presence at both venues, with a total of 30 athletes competing in 40 events at the Mt. SAC Relays and 29 athletes entered at the Bryan Clay Invite. This strategic split allows Iowa State to maximize its potential, with eight athletes participating in events at both meets.

Bryan Clay Invitational Highlights

The Bryan Clay Invitational is renowned for its ideal conditions aimed at helping athletes achieve personal records and qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. This event draws a diverse group of over 100 entrants for each of its eight featured events. Highlights include:

  • Men’s and women’s 100-meter dash
  • Men’s and women’s 200-meter dash
  • Men’s and women’s 800-meter run
  • Men’s and women’s 1,500-meter run (largest event with 1,509 entrants)
  • Men’s and women’s 5,000-meter run
  • Men’s and women’s 10,000-meter run
  • Men’s and women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase

The event promises a competitive atmosphere, making it an excellent stage for aspiring athletes to set their sights on NCAA qualifications.

Mt. SAC Relays Overview

While the Bryan Clay Invite may eclipse the Mt. SAC Relays in size, the relays provide a variety of racing divisions including community college, elite, and high school. The event is notable for also hosting Paralympic heptathlon and decathlon events, encouraging inclusivity and showcasing a range of athletic accomplishments.

Notable Cyclone Competitors

At the Bryan Clay Invite, Senior Sam Austin is set to compete in the men’s 800-meter run, while red-shirt freshman Tommy Tyynismaa will join him in the same event. Redshirt sophomore Lucas Morrison is registered for both the men’s discus throw and men’s hammer throw, alongside sophomore Hanson King in the men’s shot put.

On the women’s side, Kinsey Christianson, Camryn Hubbard, and Emma Vorpagel are all entered in the women’s 800-meter run elite at the Mt. SAC Relays, while Makayla Clark will compete in the women’s 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run at both events.

Event Schedule

The Iowa State Cyclones are set to start their competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday, with their events at the Mt. SAC Relays kicking off on Friday. Both competitions will continue through Saturday, marking an action-packed weekend for the team.

Conclusion: Aiming for Personal Bests

With both events presenting remarkable opportunities, the Iowa State track and field athletes are looking forward to setting personal bests and aiming for spots in the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. The dual participation not only showcases the athletes’ versatility but also emphasizes Iowa State’s commitment to excellence in track and field.
